WEST POINT, N.Y. - Thanks to a pair of goals from junior
Geovanna Pereira, the Boston University women's soccer team (10-5-3, 6-1-2 PL) defeated Army, 2-1, to capture the 2021 Patriot League regular season championship on Wednesday evening at Malek Stadium.
The Terriers earn their 14th regular season title in program history, and their fourth in the Patriot League. BU will be the No. 1 seed in the six-team Patriot League Tournament, which begins with the quarterfinals on Sunday. The Terriers earn a bye through the quarterfinal round, and will host a semifinal matchup at Nickerson Field on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
Pereira supplied the offense with two first-half goals as BU sported a 2-0 lead through the first 19 minutes of the match. The Black Knights (6-8-3, 3-4-2 PL) halved their deficit in the 67th minute, but were kept in check the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Abigail McNulty assisted on both goals, while junior
Ashley Buck also tallied a helper on Pereira's first goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pereira found the back of the net just 1:49 into the game. Senior Jenna Oldham launched a free kick from the left corner into the box. Army could not clear, and McNulty headed the ball to Buck, whose touch pass found Pereira.
- Sophomore Lily Matthews almost made it 2-0 when she placed a shot on Army keeper Sage Strohman low-center, forcing the latter to make her first save in the sixth minute.
- Matthews and Pereira connected for a dangerous attempt in the 16th minute, but Pereira's shot floated right to Strohman.
- BU doubled their score after forcing a turnover near midfield. McNulty raced down the left wing and flicked the ball to a speeding Pereira down the middle, and the junior one-timed it past Strohman in the 19th minute.
- The Black Knights' most dangerous chance of the first 45 minutes arguably came on their first corner kick, but Buck blocked Elizabeth Oberhaus' chance towards the top of the box.
- Oberhaus tried again five minutes out of halftime, but her shot ringed off the right post.
- Two minutes later, Buck placed a shot off a corner kick on Strohman, but the keeper made the stop.
- Army got on the scoreboard when Lauren Drysdale converted near the right side of the box off a pass from Daniela Mendoza.
- BU almost regained the two-goal lead when McNulty made enough space for a shot, but it was blocked. Moments later, freshman Eileen Solomon took a McNulty feed and lasered a shot just above the crossbar.
- The only shot the rest of the game came from freshman Morgan Fagan, who was denied to the right of the penalty spot. The ensuing corner kick for BU was unsuccessful as Strohman came out to send it away.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers outshot the Black Knights 14-9.
- Army was limited to just two shots on goal all night. Freshman Celia Braun made the lone BU save in the 71st minute.
- Corner kicks favored the Terriers 6-2.
- Pereira's performance is her first-career multi-goal game. She is the third Terrier to record a brace this year, joining Oldham and senior Amy Thompson.
- Pereira has also scored three goals and seven points in her last four games.
- McNulty is now second on the team with six assists and 10 points.
- BU has won its first Patriot League regular season title since 2018. The program also won in 2013 and 2015.
- The Terriers are now 8-1-2 all-time against Army.
