Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lehigh Withstands Late Men's Soccer Charge, 5-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Facing a three-goal deficit, the Boston University men's soccer team rallied back to pull within one in the middle of the second half but ultimately came up short at Lehigh, 5-3, on Saturday night.

With their four-game unbeaten streak snapped, the Terriers drop to 3-9-3 (2-4-2 PL), while the Mountain Hawks improve to 4-10-2 and 4-4-0 in conference play.

A combined three braces were recorded with junior Quinn Matulis earning one to help lead BU's rally attempt. He also assisted on sophomore Aidan Bone's first career goal to tally five points, an individual season-high for the Terriers this season.

"It's always hard to win a game when you give up three goals in a half or five goals in a game," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "We came up short with a comeback after getting it to 4-3, but the guys never stopped trying to create chances and played until the final whistle. Onto Wednesday against Holy Cross."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Owner of an earlier 1-1 home draw against then-No. 4 West Virginia, Lehigh quickly got on the scoreboard at 2:47 when Jack Sarkos put away a pass from Dawson Berger for the 1-0 advantage.
  • After clearing three Terrier corner kicks, the Mountain converted on their third corner kick with Euan Forrest finding the back of the net at 29:30.
  • Two minutes later, Josh Luchini extended the lead to 3-0 with a quick strike off Stevo Bednarsky's cross.
  • BU drew a foul outside the top of the box, and Matulis fired a shot past the wall to give the Terriers their first goal at 44:02.
  • Matulis put another shot on goal following a Lehigh yellow card with 17 seconds left in the half, but Blake Koski was in position for the 3-1 lead entering the locker room.
  • Lehigh came out attacking to start the second half, forcing junior Francesco Montali to make a couple of saves.
  • The Mountain Hawks kept the pressure on and retook their three-goal lead with Sarkos scoring on Luchini's cross at 56:33.
  • In the 67th minute, BU struck twice with Matulis playing a role in both scores.
  • Lehigh failed to clear a pass from Matulis, and Bone knocked the ball in at 66:10.
  • BU quickly drew a foul 24 seconds later, and Matulis converted on the penalty kick to pull within one, 4-3.
  • The Terriers remained on the attack and saw senior Gianluca Arlotti nail the crossbar at 73:40 and freshman Brian Hernandez send sophomore Eitan Rosen's corner kick attempt just wide at 74:00.
  • Lehigh though add an insurance goal in the 78th minute with a successful penalty kick from Luchini after the Mountain Hawks drew a foul in the box during a corner kick attempt.
  • Bone had one last gasp in the 88th minute, but his shot attempt hit the crossbar for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • Matulis joins Hernandez, junior Ronaldo Marshall and Rosen in scoring two goals in a game this season.
  • Bone became the seventh Terrier to net a goal this season and the 10th to record a point, while Matulis became the sixth to record at least one goal and one assist.
  • Lehigh finished with a 21-17 advantage in shot attempts and 9-4 lead in corner kicks.
  • Montali ended the game with six saves, while Korski had three for Lehigh.
  • Improving to 5-4-0 all-time in the series, Lehigh becomes the first opponent to score five goals against the Terriers since UMBC claimed a 5-1 home victory in 2012.
  • The Terriers are eliminated from contention for a Patriot League tournament spot, as there is just one game remaining with the top six squads all owning at least 12 points and BU currently at eight points.
UP NEXT
  • BU will host Holy Cross in the final game of the 2021 campaign on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.
  • Fans are encouraged to arrive before the 6 p.m. start time to help the program recognize the seven-member senior class.
