No. 10 Terriers Fall to UConn in Home Opener, 5-1
October 9, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The No. 10 Boston University men's ice hockey team suffered a 5-1 setback to UConn on Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
Playing at Agganis for the first time in 581 days, BU (1-1-0, 1-1-0 HE) was level with UConn (2–1-0, 1-1-0 HE) after 20 minutes, but the Huskies scored twice in the second period and twice over the final 20 minutes to earn a split of the weekend series.
Junior Matt Brown notched his first goal as a Terrier, with senior Joseph Campolieto earning his first assist as a Terrier on the play. Sophomore Cade Webber also recorded a helper on Brown's goal.
Sophomore Drew Commesso made 25 saves through 51:10 of work before classmate Vinny Duplessis took over for the final 8:50 and made seven saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marc Gatcomb put UConn ahead 9:52 into the proceedings.
- Brown evened the score in front of a raucous student section just 3:21 later. Webber began the sequence with an outlet pass to Campolieto at center ice. The senior defender skated up the left side and uncorked a writer from the circle that Darion Hanson (29 saves) stopped, but Brown was in perfect position to intercept the rebound and place it into the empty net.
- UConn took the lead for good just 47 seconds into the middle frame and then extended its lead to 3-1 nine minutes later.
- The Terriers thought they got a goal back early in the third period when Max Kaufman emerged from a goalmouth scrum with the puck and lifted it into the net, but the play was whistled dead and BU was assessed a minor penalty, keeping the deficit at two.
- The Huskies scored at 5:55 and again at 11:10 to complete their win.
