BOSTON - Sophomore Dylan Peterson tallied the game-tying goal and assisted on junior Case McCarthy's first-period strike to help lead the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 2-2 tie against No. 8/9 UMass on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
UMass (6-2-1, 4-0-1 HE) earned the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 1-0 shootout win against BU (3-7-1, 2-4-1 HE). Junior Jamie Armstrong also assisted on McCarthy's third goal of the season while juniors Jay O'Brien and Wilmer Skoog had the helpers on Peterson's fourth marker of the campaign. This was O'Brien's first game back in the lineup since the season-opening weekend after he missed eight games due to injury. Sophomore Drew Commesso made 23 saves, including nine in the third period to help BU force overtime.
Prior to the game, the Terriers honored military members, first responders and essential workers as part of Heroes Night at Agganis Arena by wearing special jerseys during pregame warmups which were then raffled off to those aforementioned groups at the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass struck first on a power-play goal at the 14:44 mark of the first period.
- BU answered with a slick goal by McCarthy just 1:18 later. Armstrong won possession in the offensive zone and dropped the puck for Peterson. He stopped on a dime to shake a defender before leaving the puck for McCarthy, who quickly corralled it and wristed it past Matt Murray (32 saves).
- The Minutemen responded with another goal at the 17:44 mark to take a 2-1 lead into the second stanza.
- Peterson notched the equalizer at 12:13 of the second. At the start of a power play, Skoog won a faceoff back to Peterson, who then dished it to O'Brien at the right point. O'Brien's shot bounced off a body in front and Peterson was in the right spot to find the rebound and bury it for his fourth goal of the season.
- UMass thought it scored the go-ahead goal with 11:30 remaining in regulation, but after a lengthy video review the officials confirmed it was no goal and the teams remained tied.
- In overtime, BU was dominant, outshooting the Minutemen by a 5-0 margin.
- The Terriers' best chance came when junior Domenick Fensore got around a defender and dashed for the crease, but his attempt was turned aside by Murray.
- In the shootout, the Minutemen scored on their second opportunity while BU missed on all three.
