BU, No. 10 Cornell Ready for Red Hot Hockey Saturday at Madison Square Garden

The Boston University men's ice hockey team will return to Madison Square Garden on Saturday night when the Terriers face No. 10 Cornell in the eighth edition of Red Hot Hockey. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tickets for Red Hot Hockey are available for purchase by clicking here.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is 1-1-2 in its last four games, all of which have been against ranked opponents.
- That includes a 4-3 overtime win at then-No. 8/9 UMass on Nov. 13.
- The Terriers most recently tied No. 18 Northeastern, 2-2, on Nov. 20, their fourth straight overtime game.
- BU has played four straight overtime games just one other time in the program's 100 seasons, doing so during the 2009-10 campaign.
- The Terriers have allowed just four 5-on-5 goals over their last five games.
- Five of the Terriers' top five point producers are juniors, including Wilmer Skoog (5g, 6a) and Robert Mastrosimone (5g, 6a), who tied for the team lead in both points and goals.
- Junior Domenick Fensore is third in points (10) thanks to a team-high eight assists.
- Twenty-one different Terriers have recorded a point this season, including 14 different goal scorers.
- Sixteen of those 21 BU skaters have notched at least two points this year.
RED HOT HISTORY
- BU is 3-2-2 at Red Hot Hockey, with Cornell having won the last two meetings.
- That includes a 2-0 win in 2019.
- With the exception of the Terriers' 6-3 win in the inaugural event in 2017, every game has been within at least two goals.
- That includes three overtime games (2009, 2011, 2015) in which BU is 1-0-2.
- BU won the shootout in 2015 to retain the Kelley-Harkness Cup.
- 2019 was the first time that the Terriers were held to fewer than three goals at Red Hot Hockey.
SERIES HISTORY
- Saturday marks the 49th time Boston University and Cornell have faced off, with the Big Red holding a 25-20-3 advantage.
- The teams last played at the 2019 edition of Red Hot Hockey on Nov. 30, 2019.
- BU is 8-5-2 in the past 15 meetings, but Cornell is 12-9-2 in the past 23.
- The teams first met on Jan. 10, 1925, on Beebe Lake in Ithaca, with the Terriers posting a 7-2 win.
- They played again at the same location a little over a year later (a 1-0 BU win) and did not play again until March 11, 1966, in the ECAC Tournament, where the Big Red earned a convincing 8-1 victory.
- They have faced off in the NCAA tournament on three occasions with the first two being the 1967 and 1972 national title games, won by the Big Red (4-1) and Terriers (4-0), respectively.
- As members of the ECAC, the teams met at least once a year for the next 19 years - through the 1983-84 season, after which BU joined the Hockey East Association.
- The Terriers are 8-6-2 in the 16 meetings that have taken place since they moved to Hockey East.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
- Cornell is 7-1-0 this season, with three of its wins coming in overtime.
- That includes a 3-2 OT win over Brown on Nov. 19.
- The Big Red also bested Yale, 3-0, the next day to extend its win streak to five games.
- Cornell's only loss was a 3-2 defeat at Harvard on Nov. 5.
- Senior Max Andreev and junior Matt Stienburg are tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece.
- Andreev has notched four goals and a team-high eight assists while Stienburg leads Cornell with five goals and is second to Andreev with seven assists.
- Andreev, junior Ben Berard and freshman Ondrej Psenicka all have four goals apiece.
- Freshman Joe Howe and senior Nate McDonald have each made four starts between the pipes for Cornell.
- Howe is 3-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage while McDonald is 4-0-0 with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
- Both netminders have recorded one shutout.
- BU will return home to Agganis Arena on Friday, Dec. 3, to host New Hampshire.
