BOSTON – After receiving the top slot in the Patriot League preseason poll, the Boston University men's basketball team will open its 113th season at Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island on Tuesday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.

TERRIER TIDBITS
- Led by 11th-year head coach Joe Jones, BU returns all five starters along with 88.0 percent of both point and rebound production from the 2020-21 campaign that saw the Terriers finish 7-11 (6-10 PL).
- Named the Terriers' first PL Preseason Player of the Year since 2013, graduate student Javante McCoy tallied 27 points in his final game in March to move to No. 14 all-time at BU with 1,321 career points.
- 92 points away from becoming the 40th Terrier to reach the 1,000-point milestone, senior Walter Whyte joined McCoy on the Preseason All-PL squad after averaging 13.5 ppg and 6.8 rpg this past season. Owner of 13 career double-doubles, he was named to the Lou Henson (Mid-Major Player of the Year) Award watch list.
- Senior Jonas Harper averaged 1.3 steals per game along with 8.1 ppg and 3.3 rpg to become the first Terrier since 2012 to earn a second All-Conference Defensive Team honor. He averaged 9.5 pts. and 7.5 rebs. in the two 2021 PL tournament games.
- Graduate student Sukhmail Mathon posted a personal-best 14 rebounds and four blocks in the PL quarterfinals after claiming his first All-PL Defensive Team award while adding 14 points for the double-double. He finished the year at 11.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg while shooting 55.9 FG%.
- Junior Ethan Brittain-Watts (4.7 ppg) earned 13 starts this past year and shot 47.5 3FG%, while senior Fletcher Tynen (5.1 ppg) made five starts.
- Both sophomore Daman Tate (4.9 ppg) and senior Garrett Pascoe (2.1 ppg) made two starts and 15 appearances total apiece after missing the entire 2019-20 season due to injury.
- The Terriers have two new forwards in junior transfer Nevin Zink, who averaged 9.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 60.5 FG% this past season at USC Upstate, and freshman Malcolm Chimezie, who was the No. 8 recruit in the state of New York according to ESPN.com.
- BU will be opening a season outside Massachusetts for just the fifth time since 2001, last visiting Iona in New York in 2009, and will be playing a team outside the Patriot League for the first time since winning at Merrimack on Dec. 29, 2019.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
- Selected seventh out of 14 in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, the Rams went 10-15 (7-10 A-10) last season after going 21-9 (13-5 A-10) in 2019-20.
- Guard Jeremy Sheppard received preseason All-Conference Third Team honors after averaging 11.3 ppg, 2.8 apg and 1.2 spg.
- Forward Makhel Mitchell was named to the preseason All-Defensive team after averaging 9.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 1.7 bpg.
- The Rams welcome Ball State grad student transfer Ishmael El-Amin, who averaged 16.2 ppg and 38.9 3FG% for All-MAC honors.
- URI is 82-21 (.796) at the Ryan Center over the last six years.
SERIES HISTORY
- URI owns 21-12 lead in series that dates back to 1916-17.
- The teams are meeting for the sixth time in the 21st century with five games taking place in Kingston, R.I., including URI's 2004 NIT victory vs. BU.
- In the last meeting at URI in 2011, BU trailed by 11 with 14:58 left before embarking on a 23-8 run over the next eight minutes to pull out a 70-64 win during day two of the Legends Classic. The win snapped the Rams' 32-game home win streak against non-conference opponents, which coincidentally began Dec. 22, 2006 against BU (65-51).
- Members of the Yankee Conference in the 1970s, BU and Rhode Island became founding members of ECAC North, a men's basketball only conference, in 1979.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will open the 14-game home schedule on Friday (Nov. 12) at 5 p.m. against Gordon College.
