Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Stymied At No. 17/21 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – Redshirt senior Emily Esposito tallied 10 points with five rebounds, and sophomore Caitlin Weimar totaled 10 points, but the Boston University women's basketball team could not overcome No. 17/21 Georgia Tech's swarming defense in a 78-49 loss on Tuesday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.

BU (4-7) stayed toe-to-toe with the Yellow Jackets (10-2) in the first quarter, preventing Georgia Tech from scoring in the final six minutes of the stanza. However, the home team utilized a 17-2 extended run for a 16-point lead at halftime, then outscored the Terriers 27-6 in the third to pull away.

Junior Annabelle Larnard buried a pair of fourth-quarter threes to notch eight points, while senior Chiara Tibbitt shot 3-of-4 from the field for seven points, including her second-career three-pointer.

Eylia Love dropped a game-high 19 points to power the Yellow Jackets, while Lorela Cubaj recorded a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Weimar scored BU's first bucket using a couple pivot moves to get to her right for a floater two minutes into the contest.
  • However, Georgia Tech nailed three of their first four shots from deep, starting 6-for-7 from the field, to sport a 16-2 advantage 4:30 into the game.
  • BU ripped off a 9-0 run over the final 5:49 of the quarter, highlighted with buckets from junior Maren Durant, Esposito, and Weimar. The Yellow Jackets missed their final nine shots, but still led 16-11 at the buzzer.
  • With the score 20-15 1:32 into the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets began an 10-0 spurt featuring a layup and jumper from Cubaj, putting Georgia Tech up 30-15 midway through the frame.
  • That run eventually bled out to 17-2 for a 38-20 Yellow Jacket. In the final seconds of the half, Weimar converted underneath the basket, then senior Riley Childs stayed with Elizabete Bulane down the lane and swatted her last-second shot to make it 38-22 at the break.
  • Love opened the third quarter with a layup and three-pointer, jumpstarting a 12-0 run that spanned five minutes until Esposito nailed a left elbow jumper as the clock read 4:51.
  • Freshman Lauren Davenport corralled an offensive rebound and spun to nail a jumper by the left elbow with 39 seconds left to make it 65-28 after three quarters.
  • Tibbitt hit the first two Terrier field goals of the fourth quarter with a right baseline and left wing jump shot.
  • The Terriers closed the game on triples from Larnard and Tibbitt.

GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers shot 32.7 percent from the field, but went 8-for-10 in the fourth quarter to outscore the Yellow Jackets 21-13.
