Men's Ice Hockey Posts 3-1 Home Win over UNH

BOSTON – The Boston University men's ice hockey team used a pair of power-play goals to earn a 3-1 home victory over New Hampshire on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.

It was a come-from-behind win for the Terriers as UNH struck first at 5:02 of the opening period. Junior Wilmer Skoog tied it up when he redirected in a terrific feed from classmate Matt Brown at the goalmouth on a power play with 1:29 left in the first.

The game-winner also came on a man advantage – this time on a major power play – as senior captain Logan Cockerill converted at the foot of the left circle off a pass by sophomore Dylan Peterson at 13:17 of the second.

BU had chances to build on its lead and had two goals overturned due to video replay before adding an empty-netter from grad student Max Kaufman with 27.8 ticks left. Peterson also assisted on that goal to complete a two-point day. Juniors Domenick Fensore and Case McCarthy also had one assist each.

Sophomore Drew Commesso made 29 saves to earn the win in goal as BU outshot UNH, 34-30.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harrison Blaisdell opened the scoring for UNH at the 5:02 mark of the first period.
  • BU tied the game with 1:29 to play in the opening frame. McCarthy cycled the puck to Brown, who had the vision to find Skoog cutting to the net at the left post for the finish.
  • Junior Alex Vlasic thought he made it 3-1 just 3:09 into the second stanza, but after video review the goal was waived off due to goaltender interference.
  • The Terriers then won a challenge of their own midway through the period which resulted in a major penalty on a UNH skater for a slew foot.
  • Cockerill made the major count with his first goal of the season. Peterson skated into the right circle and drew a couple Wildcat defenders to him before sliding the puck to Cockerill. The senior captain fired into the open net for the game-winning goal.
  • The Terriers had another goal overturned after video review when a Vlasic shot that deflected off Kaufman found the back of the net but was disallowed for an offside call.
  • Kaufman ensured he got his goal with an empty-netter. After Kaufman blocked a UNH shot, Peterson collected the loose puck and sprung Kaufman ahead for a breakaway and an easy goal.
GAME NOTES
  • Kaufman became the 22nd different Terrier to record a point this season.
  • Sixteen different BU skaters have lit the lamp this season after Cockerill and Kaufman both did so for the first time on Friday.
  • Peterson extended his point streak to five games; he has tallied three goals and four assists for seven points during that stretch.
  • Fensore recorded his team-leading 10th assist of the season.
  • Skoog leads BU with 13 points (6g, 7a) and is now tied with Peterson for the team lead in goals.
  • All three of Matt Brown's points (1g, 2a) this season have come at home, with both assists coming in BU wins.
  • BU went 2-for-6 on the man advantage and killed all three UNH power plays.
