Colgate Outlasts Men's Tennis, 4-3

LATHAM, N.Y. – Despite winning the top three singles matches, the Boston University came up just short to Colgate, 4-3, in the Patriot League opener on Sunday night at the Tri-City Fitness Center.

The Raiders (1-2) captured the all-important doubles point with a thrilling 15-13 tiebreaker and then rallied in the No. 4 singles match with the help of another tiebreaker to edge the Terriers (2-3) by one point.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Owen Lu and freshman Jose Maria Robalino started off with a quick 6-1 victory in the top doubles slot.
  • The Raiders though won the other two tightly-contested matches for the 1-0 lead, starting with a 6-4 win at line 3 against senior Pete Siozios and freshman Tanisq Mallpani.
  • Senior David Bogatin and sophomore Jon-Kyle Tan battled Francis Scott Bickel and Jack Selati to the end in a hard-fought 7-6(13) loss in the No. 2 match.
  • The Raiders quickly added two singles points with 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 and 6-1, 6-4 victory in the No. 5 slot.
  • BU though was able to tie the match with three straight-set victories with Bogatin winning the No. 1 match against Bickel, a 2019 All-PL First Team honoree, 6-4, 6-4.
  • Siozios coasted in the second set after winning a tiebreaker at line 2, 7-6, 6-1, and Lu held off a late charge in the No. 3 match, 6-4, 7-6.
  • With the team result on the line, Colgate's senior Jack Ablon rallied from a set down to edge Robalino, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the No. 4 slot.
