BOSTON – Making its return to Nickerson Field after a 500-day layoff, the Boston University women's soccer team started its spring season with a 2-0 setback to Army West Point on Saturday evening.
The Black Knight's first shot on goal proved to be the game-winner, as Dara Murray won a 50/50 ball just inside the 18-yard box and slotted it inside the far-left post in the 23rd minute. Army's Elise Urkov added an insurance goal in transition in the 87th minute.
How It Happened
- BU had an early set piece in the 5th minute as Ann Marie Jaworski lofted a corner kick into the 6-yard box, but Army's keeper snatched it out of the air.
- Driving near the backline, Army arched a serve towards the top of the 18-yard box, where Murray gained possession and took an extra touch before finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute.
- The Terriers worked off another corner in the 24th minute, as Abigail McNulty controlled the feed before Ashley Buck got enough force behind a strike to land BU's first attempt on frame.
- The Black Knights put the pressure on midway through the second half, lifting a chip shot from just inside the 18-yard box that sailed high, and followed with a look from 25 yards out that Messner covered easily in the 66th minute.
- Messner made a highlight-reel save in the 75th minute, elevating and getting her fingers off a shot headed under the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game.
- Alyssa Bourgeois drove a well-place ball on net from 25 yards out in the 81st minute, but BU was unable to get on the board as Army added a score in transition with three minutes remaining to seal the outcome.
