WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Boston University men's lacrosse team suffered a 14-8 setback at No. 11/10 Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Junior Matt Garber made 15 of his 17 saves in the first half to keep BU (6-3, 4-2 PL) in the contest, but Army (6-2, 4-1 PL) held a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back despite Garber's strong opening 30 minutes.
Freshman Tommy Bourque tallied two goals to lead the Terrier offense. Sophomore Vince D'Alto (1g, 1a) and freshman Christian Quadrino (1g, 1a) each notched two points. Junior Matt Baugher, graduate student Nicholas Ellerton, sophomore Donnie Howard and sophomore Louis Perfetto all found the back of the net as well while juniors Jett Dziama and Matt Hilburn added one assist apiece.
Sophomore LSM Roy Meyer had a fantastic day, leading the Terriers with a career-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers. D'Alto collected a career-best five ground balls while Perfetto and junior Will Carson each picked up three ground balls. Freshman Brian Garrity and senior Kevin Snyder combined to win nine faceoffs.
With the loss, BU is guaranteed to be the second-place team out of the Patriot League North Division. The Terriers clinched their fourth consecutive trip to the Patriot League semifinals last weekend with their win at Colgate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bourque scored just 46 seconds into the contest to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
- Army immediately answered with a goal off the ensuing faceoff to even the score at 1-1.
- Garber kept the game tied with seven straight saves before the Black Knights beat the 10-man ride from midfield with a shot into the open cage.
- The Black Knights added three more goals to end the quarter with a 5-1 advantage.
- After Garber kept his team within four, BU had a chance to get a goal on its first EMO of the game, but the Terriers twice hit the post.
- Army then went down the field and scored to take a 6-1 lead.
- Garber made a crucial save at the end of the half to keep the score at 6-1.
- BU got off to a great start in the third quarter thanks to a Baugher goal, but Army answered right back to retake a five-goal lead.
- Bourque scored his second of the game to get BU back within four, but the Black Knights tallied three straight goals to make it 10-3.
- Perfetto got on the board when he came around the cage from X and beat Wyatt Schupler (10 saves), but Army notched another man-up goal to grab an 11-4 lead.
- Quadrino connected with D'Alto on an EMO early in the fourth quarter to make it 11-5, but Army answered with three straight goals to make it 14-5.
- BU got two goals from defenders to make it a 14-7 game, as Howard scored in transition with an open look before Ellerton planted himself in front of the goal and converted a feed from D'Alto.
- Quadrino closed the scoring for the Terriers when he cut to the left post and buried a pass from Hilburn.
GAME NOTES
- D'Alto and Perfetto extended their point streaks to 14 and 15 games, respectively.
- They have yet to be held without a point in their brief BU careers.
- Garber matched his career high for saves which he set in a season-opening win at Merrimack.
