BOSTON - In a Senior Day contest featuring eight ties, the Boston University women's lacrosse team pulled away in the finale minutes with a thrilling 15-14 victory over Colgate in its Nickerson Field finale on Saturday.
The class of 2021 carried the Terriers (4-5, 3-2 PL), accounting for 18-of-21 points, led by a career-high 10 points from
Emily Vervlied.
Making the day even more memorable,
Ava Barry and Vervlied each hit the 100-career point milestone in the first half.
How It Happened
- Vervlied drove to the cage on a free position attempt before getting a friendly bounce that found its way into the back of the net to get the Terriers within one, 3-2, with 18:46 left in the half.
- Makenzie Irvine muscled a shot between a pair of Raider defenders to tie it up for the first time, 3-3, at the midway point.
- Colgate (4-5, 3-4 PL) reclaimed the lead before Ryann Gaffney won the ensuing draw and stormed down the field, scoring just seven seconds later to make it a 4-4 game.
- Barry scored her 100th career point in style, darting from 20 yards out before ripping a shot between five defenders to give the Terriers their first lead, 5-4, with 11:14 remaining in the first.
- Following another response from the Raiders, Vervlied mirrored Gaffney with a nine-second effort to swing the scoreboard back in BU's favor, 6-5.
- Colgate went for three straight scores to take a two-score grip, but the Terriers answered with three goals within a two-minute span, started by Vervlied's 100th career point and capped by a Tobey Tick buzzer-beater to put the score at 9-8 heading into the break.
- Irvine tomahawked a feed from Vervlied to give the Terriers their first two-goal lead to start the second half.
- Michelle Seger and Gaffney kept BU toe-to-toe with the Raiders as it maintained a12-11 edge with 20 minutes to go.
- Colgate tied it up for the eight time until Barry and Lauren Kaye pushed the lead back to two.
- Seger scorched her second of the day with 1:46 to play as BU held of the Raiders to improve to 3-2 in conference play.

- Vervlied either scored or assisted on six of BU's nine goals in the first half.
- Vervlied led the team in goals (4), assists (6), points (10), caused turnovers (3), and tied with Jennifer Barry for the lead in ground balls (4).
- Arielle Hammer made her first appearance in a month and finished with a career-high 10 saves.
- Megan Hickey came on for the final 16:45 of play to earn the win.
