BOSTON – After recognizing the five seniors, the Boston University softball team captured its third straight Patriot League regular season title with a run-rule doubleheader sweep over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
Highlighted by six doubles, the Terriers (30-2, 19-1 PL) finished with a 20-6 advantage in hits to defeat the Leopards (1-13, 1-9 PL), 8-0 and 11-0, and extend their win streak to 12 games. Senior
Ali DuBois (20-0) tallied eight strikeouts without a walk for her 29th career shutout, and sophomore
Lizzy Avery (1-0) earned six strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work for her first career victory.
Sophomore
Caitlin Coker drove the offense, batting a combined 4-for-6 in the lead-off position with six runs scored, while reigning PL Player of the Week and junior
Nicole Amodio continued her hot hitting with five combined RBIs on a 4-of-5 performance at the plate. Junior
Aliyah Huerta-Leipner went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three walks, three RBIs and four runs scored as well. In total, 11 Terriers collected at least one hit with nine driving in at least one run and eight touching home plate.
Game 1: BU 8, Lafayette 0 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coker led off with an infield second, took second on senior Marina Sylvestri's sac bunt and scored on Amodio's RBI single for the only needed run of the game.
- Coker started the third with a single and scored on Huerta-Leipner's RBI double.
- After Huerta-Leipner eventually swiped home with the help of Amodio drawing a throw, the Terriers loaded the bases and added two more runs off the bats of freshman Lauren Keleher and junior Bella Gargicevich-Almeida.
- Coker again started an inning with a hit, this time doubling to right center before eventually scoring on Amodio's bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
- Freshman Lauren Nett and senior Maya Kipfmiller both plated a run with an infield grounder.
- DuBois sealed the run-rule win with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth.
GAME 2: BU 11, Lafayette 0 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Emily Gant allowed a lead-off single but then earned a strikeout and pair of foul outs.
- In the bottom half, Gant followed Huerta-Leipner's RBI double with a two-out RBI triple.
- Senior Jen Horita pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single up the middle.
- Avery replaced Gant in the circle in the second and collected a pair of strikeouts.
- The Terriers tallied five runs off four hits in the bottom half with Amodio hitting a two-RBI single and Avery delivering a two-RBI double.
- Keleher singled up the middle to put the game in run-rule territory.
- In the third, BU added two more runs with Huerta-Leipner hitting an RBI sac fly and Amodio doubling to right.
- With the bases loaded in the fourth, Kipfmiller plated her second run of the day with a grounder.
- Trying to extend the game, Lafayette loaded the bases on a pair of walks and single before sophomore Allison Boaz slammed the door with a ground out.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- The Terriers now own 11 conference regular season titles after claiming eight in the America East and titles in the PL in 2018 and 2019.
- BU last three-peated as regular season champs in 2001-03 and 2010-12.
- BU earned its first run-rule DH sweep since claiming an 8-0(5) win over Iona and 10-1(5) victory over Bryant during the 2018 Nor'easter Invite at the University of Hartford.
- The run-rule DH sweep marked BU's first in the Patriot League.
- The Terriers earned their first shutout run-rule DH sweep since beating Rhode Island, 8-0 and 8-0, in 2012.
- DuBois ranks tied-for-third all-time at BU with 29 career shutouts and is two shy of tying the PL record.
- Amodio's 30 RBIs this season are a personal best after she tallied 26 total in 57 games as a freshman in 2019.
- BU batted .488 on the day to increase its series lead to 20-0 all-time against Lafayette.
- The Terriers have now earned four straight shutouts against the Leopards.

- The Terriers will host the Leopards two more times on Sunday with the ESPN+ broadcast starting at 12 p.m.
- BU will try to run-rule an opponent in a weekend series for the first time since beating Stony Brook three times in 2011.
- The doubleheader marks BU's final home games of the regular season before the Terriers host the PL tournament on May 13-15.
