Softball Powers Way to Run-Rule Series Sweep over Lafayette

BOSTON – Batting over .500 Sunday afternoon, the Boston University softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Lafayette with both contests lasting just five innings apiece.

Junior Emily Gant, sophomore Caitlin Coker and senior Jen Horita batted an incredible combined 17-for-20 with 14 RBIs and 16 runs scored to help the Terriers (32-2, 21-1 PL) follow up on a 10-0 win with a 17-2 game two victory. Senior Ali DuBois (21-0) collected her second consecutive shutout by holding the Leopards (1-15, 1-11 PL) to one hit, and sophomore Allison Boaz (5-0) recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in the circle.

GAME 1: BU 10, Lafayette 0 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coker led off the game with a triple and eventually scored on a misplayed grounder.
  • Senior Jen Horita later delivered a two-out, two-RBI single and extended the lead to 4-0 on freshman Lauren Keleher's RBI single.
  • Lafayette earned its lone hit against DuBois to start off the second inning but was unable to advance the runner past second.
  • Senior Patricia Dun and Coker started the bottom half with back-to-back singles before Gant doubled down the left field line for two RBIs and scored on junior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's RBI single for the 7-0 lead.
  • Gant added another two-RBI double in the third, and the Terriers took advantage of two more errors to grab a 10-0 advantage.
  • DuBois earned her fourth strikeout to seal the program's 15th shutout of the season.
GAME 2: BU 17, Lafayette 2 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first inning took approximately 40 minutes, as the Leopards struck first against Boaz with two runs off three hits and an error.
  • Lafayette had the bases loaded with zero outs and a 1-0 lead before Boaz earned a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts.
  • The Leopards would only earn two more hits the rest of the way, as BU responded with eight runs off seven hits and an error.
  • Amodio followed Huerta-Leipner's RBI sac fly with an RBI double and run scored on Horita's single.
  • After leading off the game with an infield single, Coker delivered a bases-clearing double and scored on Gant's RBI single to give BU a commanding 8-2 lead.
  • The pair pushed the lead to double digits in the third with Gant plating Coker on an RBI triple and then scoring on Huerta-Leipner's second RBI sac fly.
  • Horita added an RBI double and run scored to move ahead, 12-2.
  • Two freshmen had big hits in the fourth, as Raegan Kelly hit a two-RBI single and then scored on Kate Pryor's RBI double.
  • Trying to stay alive, Lafayette began the fifth with back-to-back singles, but Boaz shut the door with a ground out, strikeout and infield pop up.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • With her 30th career shutout, DuBois is now one shy of tying the PL record and is also in sole possession of third place in the BU record book.
  • DuBois also moved to No. 3 all-time in the PL with 612 career strikeouts.
  • Hitting a perfect 6-for-6 today with two doubles and a triple, Gant owns 20 RBIs with 73 at-bats this season after totaling 15 over 157 at-bats her first two seasons.
  • Coker tied a program record with four runs scored in the second contest and finished the weekend with 13 total runs in 13 at-bats.
  • BU improved to 22-0 all-time against Lafayette after hitting a combined .511 in the four-game series.
NEXT UP: PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
  • The Terriers are next officially scheduled to host their third straight PL tournament on May 13-15 with three other teams coming to campus.
  • BU will be focusing on finals this week but could potentially make up two games that were postponed at Lehigh back on March 28 due to predicted inclement weather.
