LOWELL, Mass. – Led by senior
Ali DuBois' 13 strikeouts and sophomore
Caitlin Coker's perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, the Boston University softball team concluded a historic regular season with a 5-0 win at UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
With their 16th shutout, the Terriers will enter Thursday's Patriot League tournament with a 33-2 record and program record-breaking .943 winning percentage, well ahead of the 1993 squad's 32-6 (.842) regular season performance. DuBois held the River Hawks (13-16) to just two hits in six innings of work before sophomore
Lizzy Avery sealed the win in relief.
On the offensive front, beyond Coker's fourth 3+ hit game of the season, junior
Emily Gant had an RBI single along with a run scored. Freshman
Lauren Nett delivered a key two-RBI single as well to create distance between the two teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coker started the game with a walk before taking second on a wild pitch and scoring on Gant's RBI single.
- The River Hawks' Chelsea Runyon (2-5) ran into trouble with two more walks and a run scored via a double steal.
- Nett prompted the pitching change with two-RBI single up the middle.
- DuBois was on fire from the start in the circle, as she struck out the side to maintain the 4-0 lead.
- Coker added one more run by doubling to left in the second and scoring on a throwing error from Ryley White in the second.
- Coker would go on to collect two more hits, both singles, against White, who finished with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings of relief.
- The damage was already done though, and DuBois pitched five no-hit innings before the River Hawks collected a pair of singles.
- DuBois ended the threat with a ground out and strikeout.
- Avery earned a strikeout of her own in a scoreless seventh for the combined shutout.
GAME NOTES
- BU ends the regular season on a 15-game win streak, which is currently tied for fourth longest in program history behind the earlier PL record-breaking 17 game win streak.
- DuBois claimed her 13th career 10+ strikeout performance and her ninth combined shutout alongside her 30 solo shutouts.
- The 13 strikeouts were one shy of tying her personal best set earlier this season at Merrimack.
- In her last five games, the reigning NFCA National Player of the Week Coker is a combined 13-for-16 with 15 runs scored.
- BU improved to 15-2 all-time against UMass Lowell with an 8-0 road record.
NEXT UP: Patriot League Tournament
- The Terriers will host their third straight conference tournament as regular season champions starting Thursday (May 13) against an opponent to be determined with Colgate, Lehigh, Army West Point and Bucknell all battling this weekend for one of the three remaining slots.
- BU will try to make more program history and win a third straight conference tournament title after coming up just short in 1994, 1998, 2004 and 2011.
