The Boston University men's lacrosse team will begin its quest for the program's first-ever Patriot League title when the Terriers host Colgate in a Patriot League quarterfinal contest on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Due to institutional policy regarding visitors on campus, spectators are not allowed at any athletic event during the spring semester. For BU Athletics outdoor facilities, this restriction includes all areas surrounding the venue. Please be advised that any visitors who gather to watch an event will be asked to leave the area by game management personnel.
This will be the third meeting this season between BU and Colgate, with the Terriers sweeping the regular-season series with a 16-11 home win on March 20 and a 14-10 road victory on April 10. BU has won three straight games against Colgate dating back to last season and is 6-3 all-time against the Raiders.
Tuesday will be the third time that BU has hosted a Patriot League quarterfinal matchup. In 2017, the Terriers defeated Lehigh, 10-4, in their first-ever playoff game. BU also bested Bucknell, 14-8, in 2019. The Terriers are 3-0 all-time in the conference quarterfinals;Â in addition to the two home wins, the Terriers topped then-No. 10 Bucknell, 12-11, on the road in 2018. BU is 3-3 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament and is seeking its fourth straight trip to the Patriot League semifinals.
BU owns the fifth-lowest opponent clearing percentage (.801) in the country this season. That mark ranks second in the Patriot League. The Terriers held Colgate to a .767 clearing percentage this season, including a 20-of-27 mark in the 16-11 home win in March. One reason for the Terriers' excellent ride has been their propensity for causing turnovers, as BU is 10th in the country and second in the Patriot League with an average of 9.0 caused turnovers per game.
Colgate nearly pulled off an upset of No. 11 Army West Point, but came up just short in a 13-11 loss at West Point on Friday to close the regular season. The Raiders have lost four of their last five games.
Junior Brian Minicus leads Colgate with 31 points thanks to 13 goals and a team-high 18 assists. Senior Mike Hawkins leads the team with 16 goals. Sophomore Thomas Colucci is 76-for-138 (.551) at the faceoff X and leads the squad with 36 ground balls this year. Junior Thor Adamec and sophomore Donny Gayhardt lead Colgate with five caused turnovers apiece. Junior Sean Collins has played every minute in the cage this season, posting a .481 save percentage and a 13.64 goals-against average.
The winner of Tuesday's contest will travel to Lehigh and face the top-seeded Mountain Hawks in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
