BOSTON - Sophomore
Louis Perfetto recorded a hat trick and was one of six different Terriers to find the back of the net, but the Boston University men's lacrosse team fell to Colgate, 11-8, in a Patriot League quarterfinal contest on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
BU (6-5) took a 7-4 lead with 6:11 to play in the third quarter, but Colgate (3-6) scored the final three goals of the quarter to tie the game before notching three straight goals to open the final 15 minutes and put the contest away. Freshman
Tommy Bourque scored to make it 10-8 with 4:30 remaining, but Brian Minicus sealed the victory with 2:50 to go thanks to an open-net strike.
Perfetto's three goals paced the Terrier offense as he extended his point streak to 17 games. Sophomore
Vince D'Alto (1g, 1a) pushed his point streak to 15 games with his two points while junior
Matt Baugher also finished the night with two points thanks to his pair of assists. Freshmen
Christian Quadrino and
Tommy Jepson both scored, as did junior
Jack Collins. Sophomore
Donnie Howard chipped in an assist as well.
Junior goalkeeper
Alex Gainey made 12 saves and scooped up two ground balls in a valiant effort. Sophomore
Roy Meyer had another excellent game at LSM, causing four turnovers and collecting four ground balls. Junior
Matt Gardner was excellent in his first start at close defense for the Terriers, as he recorded three caused turnovers. Five other BU players had one caused turnover, including sophomore
Patrick Morrison, who tallied four ground balls as well. Graduate student
Nicholas Ellerton recovered five ground balls in his final collegiate contest.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams traded goals within the first 52 seconds, with Perfetto answering a quick Colgate strike to even the score at 1-1
- The Raiders added a second marker with 3:01 to play in the frame to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
- Perfetto tied the game early in the second stanza when he forced a Colgate turnover in its own end, picked up the ground ball and immediately ripped home his second goal of the day.
- A nifty individual effort from Quadrino gave BU its first lead of the game with 11:49 to play in the first half, but Colgate answered a minute later to tie the score before taking a 4-3 lead with just 2:00 left in the stanza.
- BU opened the second half on a 4-0 run, beginning with a goal from D'Alto.
- Collins, Perfetto and Jepson followed D'Alto's strike to push the Terriers' lead to 7-4.
- The Raiders responded with three unanswered goals to close the third quarter, including one with just 0.5 ticks on the clock, to tie the game at 7-7.
- Colgate then scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter en route to the win.
GAME NOTES
- This was the Terriers' first loss in the Patriot League quarterfinals; they were previously 3-0 in the opening round of the conference tournament.
- BU held Colgate to a 1-for-5 night on extra-man opportunities.
- The Terriers finished the night 22-of-24 in the clearing game while forcing Colgate into six failed clears.
- D'Alto finished the year with a team-high 42 points thanks to 23 goals and a team-best 19 assists.
- His 42 points is tied for eighth all-time for a Terrier in a single season, while his 19 assists is fifth-most by a Terrier in a single yearÂ
- Perfetto finished the campaign with 18 goals and 17 assists for 35 points.
- Meyer closed the year with 26 caused turnovers, which is the fifth-best single-season output in that category in program history.
- He also collected 32 ground balls this season, which was second behind Morrison's team-high 38 ground balls.
- Baugher finished the year on a six-game point streak, scoring nine of his 10 goals for the season during that stretch.
- Quadrino capped his terrific debut year with 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points.
- Collins became the 20th different Terrier to score a goal this season.
- BU is slated to return its top 10 point producers from 2021 next season.
