BOSTON – Taking Nickerson Field for its 2021 home opener, the Boston University women's soccer team finished with a 1-1 double overtime draw vs. UMass Lowell Monday night.
Sophomore
Abigail McNulty made a statement with her first career goal, lining up a feed from junior
Geovanna Pereira and drove it just under the far left post to make it a 1-0 game in the 38th minute.
However, UMass Lowell responded coming out of the break and netted the equalizer in the 48th minute with a rip from 20 yards out.
The Terriers outshot the River Hawks 11-6 and held a 11-1 advantage in corner kicks for the match, but settled for the draw after 110 minutes of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED

- In her first career start, junior Gretchen Bennett batted down back-to-back shots from the edge of the 18-yard box from the River Hawks to keep the clean sheet 15 minutes in.
- Junior Ashley Buck had a chance to break the stalemate in the 30th minute with a flick off a corner kick from 10 yards out, while Eileen Solomon almost polished off a transition progress with strike from 15 yards out that veered just wide of the post.
- McNulty broke through in the 38th minute, collecting a cross from Pereira and lifted a left-footed shot just under the crossbar
- UMass Lowell delivered the equalizer coming out of the break as Ioanna Papatheodarou weaved her way to the center of the 18-yard box and placed the ball just inside the right post to even the score in the 48th minute.
- From there, each team locked into physical play and neither squad recorded a shot until senior Taylor Kofton snapped a header past the frame in the 77th minute.
- Pereira had one last chance for the Terriers to reclaim the upper hand in the final 45 seconds, but her one-timer inside the six missed was blocked as the game headed into extra time.
- In 20 minutes of overtime, BU was able to launch the one shot over both frames as the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.
