Terriers Edged at Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite holding a sizable advantage in shots and corners, the Boston University field hockey team fell at Providence, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Lennon Family Field.

The Terriers erased a 1-0 deficit with freshman Payton Anderson's first collegiate goal in the 27th minute and only allowed two shots the rest of the game but the Friars scored on one of them and held off BU down the stretch thanks to a 12-save performance from goalkeeper Asia Porter.

BU moves to 1-1 on the year while Providence improves to 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU got off to a good start with four first-quarter shots - all on goal - but the teams were scoreless heading into the second quarter.
  • The Friars opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Niamh Gowing dribbled from the right side and found Olivia Ward in front of the cage for a one-timer.
  • The Terriers earned three second-quarter corners and converted on the last one as Anderson blasted a shot off Porter and in off assists by seniors Casey Thompson and Rebecca Janes with 3:48 left in the opening half.
  • After heading into the break even, BU dominated the second half, holding a 9-2 shot advantage in the final 30 minutes while earning seven corners and not allowing any on the other end.
  • BU earned four corners in a span of two minutes towards the end of the third quarter but Porter and the Friars' defense came up strong to keep the score tied.
  • Providence's lone shot of the final quarter ended up being the decisive play of the contest as a tipped pass was juggled by Gowing at the top of the circle before she chopped a shot that went off the turf and into the top left corner of the cage at 46:24.
  • The Terriers continued to create scoring chances down the stretch and up until the very end before ultimately coming up just short.
GAME NOTES
  • This marked BU's first regulation loss since Oct. 30, 2019, at Harvard.
  • The Terriers outshot the Friars, 16-5, and held a commanding 11-1 advantage in corners.

  • Kelly and Thomason made one save apiece in goal for the Terriers.
