BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman
Payton Anderson scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season but the Boston University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 contest at Lehigh on Friday afternoon in the Patriot League opener.
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute and doubled their advantage on a corner goal with just over seven minutes to play.
Anderson scored from the top of the circle off a corner at 55:40 with assists from seniors
Casey Thompson and
Rebecca Janes.
With the loss, BU moves to 2-5 on the season while Lehigh improves to 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a defensive battle for the majority of the opening half as the teams combined for just five shots before halftime.
- The first shot of the day came in the ninth minute as a near-post attempt by Lehigh's Lotte Smorenburg was stopped by junior Caroline Kelly.
- Graduate student Miya Denison tested Lehigh netminder Maddie Kahn with a shot two minutes later but it was turned aside.
- The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring with a field goal at the 24:58 mark as Julia Gatelein found Sarah Bonthuis in the middle of the circle for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
- Both teams had two shots on goal in the opening half.
- Kelly kept BU in the contest with three saves in the third quarter, including two back-to-back stops in the 33rd minute.Â
- The Terriers earned consecutive corners four minutes into the final period but shots by sophomore Thalia Steenssens were blocked each time.
- Another BU corner soon after resulted in a Lehigh save off a shot by Anderson.
- Lehigh got what would be a key insurance goal in the 53rd minute as Drew Pecora inserted on a corner before stationing at the left post, where she sent in a pass from Gatelein.
- BU pulled Kelly in favor of an extra field player and capitalized on its fourth corner of the quarter as Anderson found the right side of the cage from the top of the circle.
- Lehigh held on, however, as the Terriers were unable to generate another scoring chance.
