BOSTON – Facing the second of three consecutive in-state opponents, the Boston University men's soccer team welcomes UMass to Nickerson Field Friday night with action slated to begin at 7 p.m.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is hosting its second consecutive opponent to be coming off an NCAA tournament appearance after holding No. 20 New Hampshire scoreless for 82 minutes on Aug. 26 in a 2-0 loss.
- Ranked No. 57 in TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 Preseason Players to Watch, junior Quinn Matulis scored the Terriers' first goal of the season on Monday at Boston College, who rallied with two second-half goals for the 2-1 victory.
- Junior Colin Innes helped set up Matulis' successful penalty kick with a dangerous through ball to a running sophomore Matthew Boberg, who was taken down in the box.
- Junior Francesco Montali has played every minute at net, posting a .692 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average.
- Through two games, opponents own a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks and 13-3 advantage in shots on goal.
SCOUTING UMASS
- The Minutemen went 7-2-3 in the spring and earned an NCAA at-large bid that led to them dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 12 national seed Penn State.
- Selected to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, UMass is 1-0-1 to start the season with a 1-1 home draw vs. Northeastern and 2-0 win at Sacred Heart.
- Joe Leslie scored both goals on Monday after Ben Shepherd scored against the Huskies and missed the SHU game due to receiving a red card last Thursday.
- Marvyn Dorchin has played every minute at net, posting a .857 save percentage and 0.45 goals against average after posting a 1.32 GAA and .746 save percentage this past spring.
SERIES HISTORY
- UMass leads the all-time series, 18-23-7, dating back to 1951, though BU is 5-2-0 over the last seven meetings.
- In the last meeting in 2019 at home, the Minutemen broke a scoreless deadlock in the 78th minute with a goal and withstood seven Terrier corner kicks for the 1-0 victory.
- Three years ago at Nickerson Field, Matt McDonnell tallied a pair of goals to help BU overcome two one-goal deficits and win, 3-2, on Kari Petursson's 25-yard strike in the 85th minute.
