ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Competing in its first Patriot League road matchup, the Boston University women's soccer team rolled to a 3-1 win at preseason Patriot League favorite Navy on Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Both seniors
Amy Thompson and
Jenna Oldham netted their third goals of the season in the first half before sophomore Abby McNulty sealed the win in the 90th with her second to help the Terriers improve to 5-5-1 (2-1-0 PL).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams created chances in the early stages as Navy had the game's first shot on goal and soon after had an attempt go off the left post.
- BU was unable to take advantage of two corners in the first 20 minutes of play but used some strong passing to open the scoring in the 25th minute.
- McNulty dribbed up the left side before sliding the ball into the box, where sophomore Lily Matthews used a nice first touch to create space and send a perfectly placed cross in front to Thompson, who found the back of the ne at the 24:32 mark, just seconds after coming on as a substitute.
- The Terriers doubled their lead off a set piece from 25 yards out as Oldham bent a free kick around the Navy wall and inside the near post to make it 2-0 at 33:20.
- BU continued to put on pressure for the remainder of the opening half but settled for a 2-0 advantage at the break.
- The Midshipmen came out of halftime focused and cut their deficit in half just 2:11 into the second half as Jenna Daunt lofted a shot to the top corner off an assist Alexa Riddle.
- That goal energized the home squad, which quickly generated three corners and three shots on frame in search of an equalizer.
- Junior Gretchen Bennett and the BU defense was up to the task, however, and kept the score at 2-1.
- Bennett would add one more save off a Navy corner in the 74th minute.
- McNulty put the finishing touches on the win with a incredible individual effort, dribbling through the Navy defense on the right side before getting into the box and ripping a left-footed strike that was too strong for the Navy goalkeeper with just 12 seconds left in regulation.
GAME NOTES
- Freshman Celia Braun stopped the only shot on goal she faced in the opening half before Bennett came on and made four saves in the second half.
- The BU backline helped clear away six corners and added a team save on a great opportunity for Navy in the 28th minute when the score was 1-0.
- Navy held a 17-13 edge in shots.
- BU earned three corners and committed only four fouls.
