Army Pulls Away Late to Defeat Men's Soccer, 2-0

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After making a pair of key saves, Army West Point found the back of the net twice during the final 14 minutes of regulation to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 2-0, on Wednesday night at Malek Stadium.

With their fourth home shutout, the Black Knights (6-2-1, 3-0-0 PL) remain atop the Patriot League standings at nine points, while the Terriers (1-6-1, 1-2-0 PL) stay at three points in conference play.

"We got beat by a team that wanted to win more than us tonight, took their chances well and deserved to win," said head coach Kevin Nylen.  "We need to be humble and willing to suffer, as we continue to find our way at this point in the season."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU earned the game's first corner in the 19th minute and would later attempt the first shot in the 23rd minute when Jacob Suppiah stopped a shot from junior Quinn Matulis.
  • Two minutes later, Matulis later sent a free kick outside the box at the far post to set up a header from junior Ronaldo Marshall that was saved by Suppiah.
  • The Terriers maintained the pressure and nearly took the lead at 31:44 when sophomore Matthew Boberg fed a ball toward a charging freshman Brian Hernandez, who tried to flick the ball inside the left post past a perfectly positioned Suppiah.
  • The Black Knights earned their first shot in the 43rd minute with a wide left attempt, as the teams entered the locker room scoreless.
  • BU had another great look four minutes into the second half when junior Colin Innes made a run into the box and sent the ball toward the right side to junior Miles Dycaico.
  • Suppiah came off his line to try to stop Dycaico's attempt, which went under Suppiah's legs and was inches away from going over the line before being cleared away from an Army defender for the team save.
  • BU cleared Army's first corner kick in the 76th minute, but the Black Knights brought the ball back up the right side from midfield and watched John Poncy feed a cross into the box for a point-blank one-timer from Andrew Guerra at 76:47.
  • Oscar Pereira provided the insurance goal from the top of the box at 80:14 to increase his Patriot League leading point total to 13 points (4g,5a).
  • Suppiah earned his final save on Matulis' shot at 83:34 and helped the backline clear two corners over the final 10 minutes to seal the shutout.
GAME NOTES
  • Despite owning a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, BU finished tied in shots with Army, 8-8.
  • Matulis led all players with four shot attempts.
  • Suppiah claimed four of Army's five saves, while Montali had two for the Terriers.
  • The Black Knights have now scored multiple goals in eight of their nine games played this season.
