Men's Basketball Cruises to 79-53 Win at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Boosted by a pair of double-doubles and graduate student Javante McCoy's game-high 25 points, the Boston University men's basketball team cruised to a 79-53 win at American in front of a national audience on CBS Sports Network Monday night.

With their largest margin of victory and second wire-to-wire win this season, the Terriers improve to 11-6 and 2-2 in Patriot League play. They finished 29-of-63 (.460) from the field and held the Eagles (4-10, 0-2 PL) to 21-of-54 (.389) while posting a 44-29 advantage in rebounds.

Both graduate student Sukhmail Mathon (19 pts.) and senior Walter Whyte (17 pts.) tallied 10 rebounds apiece to give BU two double-doubles in the same game for the first time since a 2020 Patriot League semifinal win over Bucknell. McCoy shot 11-of-18 with two of the Terriers' six 3-pointers and four assists to direct the offense.

Matt Rogers earned 13 points for the Eagles, while Josh Alexander contributed 12 off the bench. Colin Smalls was the third in double figures at 10 points, as Johnny O'Neil (10.2 ppg) was held to 2-of-13 shooting for four points alongside a team-high seven rebounds.

  • McCoy's turnaround jumper on BU's final possession helped the Terriers enter the locker room ahead, 42-29.
  • The Eagles chipped away and pulled within eight, 46-38, at 16:53 but would never get any closer.
  • With a 54-43 lead following Smalls' driving layup at 11:45, the Terriers went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to put the game away.
  • Tynen's driving layup put the Terriers ahead, 79-51, with 3:04 left.
