BOSTON - Despite doubling up Vermont in shots, the Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime contest to the visiting Catamounts on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.
Junior
Robert Mastrosimone opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period before Vermont got an equalizer early in the second. Juniors
Matt Brown and
Wilmer Skoog provided the assists on Mastrosimone's seventh strike of the campaign.
Gabe Carriere stopped BU's final 32 shots on the night before teammate William Lemay potted the winner off a rebound exactly halfway through the overtime period.
BU moves to an even 10-10-3 on the year with a 6-6-3 Hockey East mark. The Catamounts improve to 4-14-2 and 3-7-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU dominated the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Catamounts, 14-3.
- The Terriers got on the board with 3:48 remaining in the opening frame thanks to hard work from Skoog, Brown and Mastrosimone in the offensive zone. Brown eventually won a battle for the puck in the left corner and raced behind the net before curling around the right post and finding Mastrosimone on the other side of the crease for the finish.
- Vermont evened the score 2:07 into the second stanza, but sophomore Drew Commesso (19 saves) made a great glove stop later in the period to keep the game tied.
- BU continued to pressure Carriere's cage, as the Terriers outshot the Catamounts, 28-15, over the final two periods, but the UVM netminder stayed strong to force overtime.
- O'Brien nearly won it for BU in overtime after a sensational move to get past a Catamount defender in the UVM zone, but Carriere made the save that gave his team a chance to win.
GAME NOTES
- Brown extended his point streak to four games.
- He has totaled three goals and two assists during that stretch and has notched a point in six of his last seven appearances.
- Mastrosimone is now tied with sophomore Dylan Peterson for the team lead in goals after burying his seventh of the season, which also moved him to second on the squad in points with 16 (7g, 9a).
- Skoog secured his ninth assist of the season on Friday.
- BU went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and has now been successful on 25 straight PKs dating back to Nov. 27.
