Men's Soccer Snaps Series Skid with 1-0 Triumph at Loyola Maryland

BALTIMORE, Md. – Led by senior Quinn Matulis' 49th-minute penalty kick and classmate Francesco Montali's four saves, the Boston University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at defending Patriot League champion Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

With their second consecutive shutout and sixth overall, the Terriers improve to 4-3-6 and 2-1-3 in conference play, as the Greyhounds (4-5-4, 2-2-2 PL) saw their nine-game home unbeaten streak (6-0-3) dating back to last season snapped.

Loyola entered the contest having scored a combined 14 goals over the last five series meetings (4-0-1), but BU set the tone by dominating possession in the first half and withstanding the late charge for the shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU earned a corner kick in the third minute, and senior Griffin Roached head the ball over the crossbar.
  • Senior Colin Innes forced saves from Alex Bobocea in both the 13th and 14th minutes, respectively.
  • Bobocea kept the game scoreless with his third stop off junior Andrew Rent's attempt three minutes later.
  • Montali made his lone save of the half at 34:21 and added his second seconds into the second stanza.
  • The Terriers drew the penalty kick when senior Ryan Lee's dangerous cross hit the extended arm of a Loyola defender in the box.
  • Matulis hesitated at first on the attempt to make Bobocea commit and then fired a shot for the 1-0 lead.
  • Montali made an impressive diving save to his left in the 66th minute and scooped up a hard bouncer four minutes later.
  • The Greyhounds earned a corner at 71:32 but missed thir last shot attempt of the game for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • Matulis is now in sole possession of second on the team for both goals (2) and points (7) with his first game winner of the season.
  • Montali's six shutouts are the most by a Terrier since Mike Bernardi ('18) posted seven in 2017.
  • The Greyhounds finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots, as the teams ended in a 6-6 tie on corner kicks.
  • Both Montali and Bobocea ended the contest with four saves.
  • BU is now 4-5-3 all-time in the rivalry with its first win over the Greyhounds since a 2-1 home victory in 2015.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will remain on the road and conclude non-conference action with a short trek to Northeastern on Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 6 p.m.
  • BU earned a 3-1 home win last season to avenge a 1-0 OT road loss in 2019.
