BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Boston University women's soccer program has six Terriers who earned 2022 All-Patriot League Team honors, highlighted by freshman
Giulianna Gianino's selection as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. The league announced the awards on Friday afternoon.
Gianino becomes the ninth Terrier in program history to be named a conference Rookie of the Year, and the fifth since BU joined the Patriot League in 2013. She is the first since Taylor Kofton received the distinction in 2018. In addition, Gianino also earns a spot on the All-Patriot League Second Team.
Redshirt seniors
Jenna Oldham and
Amy Thompson are chosen for the All-Patriot League First Team. Oldham snags a spot on the First Team for the third consecutive year, becoming the 12th Terrier all-time to garner that recognition. Thompson earns her first-career First Team selection after receiving a Third Team accolade in 2021.
Joining Gianino on the Second Team are junior
Abigail McNulty and sophomore
Morgan Fagan. McNulty picks up her second All-Patriot League honor after a First Team selection a season ago, while Fagan earns a First Team spot for the first time as a Terrier.
Junior
Lily Matthews is named to the Third Team, her second-consecutive season with an All-Patriot League after she was selected to the Second Team last year.
In total, the Terriers share the league lead with Army for the most student-athletes named to an All-League team with six. BU is also the only Patriot League school to have at least one student-athlete on each All-League team.
GIULIANNA GIANINO – ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, SECOND TEAM
- Gianino tied for third on the team with three goals on the campaign.
- All three of her goals either tied the game or were go-ahead tallies.
- She was one of seven Terriers, and the lone rookie, to start all 18 games on the season to this point.
- Gianino's first-career goal, which was also BU's first of the season, leveled the game at 1-1 with under four minutes to play against Providence, who was an at-large participant in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
JENNA OLDHAM – FIRST TEAM
- Oldham shared the team lead and was tied for fourth in the Patriot League with four assists on the year, totaling eight points.
- Seven of those points came in the final four matches of the year, including the game-deciding goal at Holy Cross and a three-point effort at Loyola Maryland.
- She was one of two Patriot League student-athletes, the other being Defensive Player of the Year Emma Richey, to receive multiple Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week awards this year.
- In her career, Oldham has recorded seven goals and 16 assists in 81 games played.
AMY THOMPSON – FIRST TEAM
- Thompson ranked second on the team and tied for sixth in the Patriot League with four goals in 2022, matching her output from 2021.
- She was also top-five in the league in shots per game (2.28) and shots on target (20).
- Three of her goals served as game-winners, all of which came against Patriot League opponents to rank second in league action.
- In 32 matches across two seasons at BU, Thompson has scored eight times while adding two assists.
ABIGAIL McNULTY – SECOND TEAM
- McNulty shared the team lead in assists (four) and ranked second on the team in points (10) for the second year in a row.
- She also set a season-best with three goals on the campaign.
- Like her teammate in Thompson, she was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. The pair were the only league student-athletes to achieve that honor.
- McNulty's goal against No. 25 Harvard on Oct. 4 helped secure BU's first win over a ranked foe since 2014.
MORGAN FAGAN – SECOND TEAM
- Fagan paced the Terriers with a career-best six goals and 15 points.
- She tied for first in the Patriot League with those six tallies, and was tied for second with nine points against league opponents.
- Her three game-winning goals all came on the road, helping guide BU past UMass, American, and Loyola Maryland.
- Fagan was generated 22 points on nine goals and four assists in her first two seasons with the Terriers.
LILY MATTHEWS – THIRD TEAM
- Matthews tied for third on the team with three assists, setting a career-best.
- Two of those helpers led to game-winning goals against Providence and American.
- She also ranked second on the team with 1,365 minutes played.
- Matthews has started 37 of her 43 career matches at BU.
BU, which captured the third seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament, welcomes sixth-seeded Loyola Maryland to Nickerson Field on Sunday (Oct. 30). Opening kick is slated for 2 p.m.
