Terriers Top Bucknell, 2-1, to Claim PL Regular-Season TItle

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Boston University field hockey team clinched its sixth Patriot League regular-season title in the past eight years thanks to a 2-1 road win over Bucknell at Graham Field on Sunday.

Junior Tess Csejka opened the scoring and sophomore Payton Anderson broke a 1-1 tie with a third-quarter corner goal.

Senior Caroline Kelly made seven saves, including two on Bucknell corners in the final minute of regulation, to secure the victory as BU closed out the regular season with 5-1 record in Patriot League and an overall record of 9-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Csejka opened the scoring seconds after entering the game, giving BU a 1-0 lead at the 5:12 mark.
  • The junior took a pass from classmate Thalia Steenssens up the right side and initially tried to move in along the endline before cutting back and executing a perfectly placed reverse-stick drive to the far boards for her squad-leading 10th goal of the season.
  • Kelly made three of her seven saves in the opening quarter to protect the early lead.
  • The home team got an equalizer in the second quarter, however, as Lily Neilson scored off a corner in the 19th minute and the teams headed into the break 1-1.
  • The Terriers earned four corners in the contest and all of them came in the third quarter.
  • BU's fourth and final corner proved to be the decisive play Anderson found the back of the cage for her ninth goal of the year at the 37:03 mark after having a goal disallowed moments earlier.
  • Graduate student Casey Thompson and Steenssens picked up assists on the corner goal, giving them a team-best nine each on the season.
  • Looking to draw even, Bucknell put on pressure in the fourth quarter and generated five corners and four shots on goal.
  • Like BU, Bucknell also had a goal overturned off a corner, as it was deemed that the incoming shot was dangerous with just over a minute left in regulation.
  • Kelly and the Terrier defense stood tall down the stretch and on the final Bison corner with 11.4 seconds on the clock, Kelly knocked a shot from harm's way to seal the victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Bucknell held a 9-6 shot advantage for the contest.
  • Kelly raised her season save percentage to .791 with her seven-save performance.
  • This is the sixth time that BU will be the top seed for the Patriot League tournament.
  • BU improved to 4-1 in road games against the Bison.
