BOSTON – The Boston University men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Navy in the Patriot League semifinals but had its season come to an end on penalty kicks, 9-8, Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
The second-seeded Terriers (6-5-7) dominated possession for much of the contest, posting advantages in both shots (13-8) and corner kicks (13-5) against the No. 4 Midshipmen (6-4-9), who became the fourth different opponent in BU's last four conference tournament appearances dating back to 2016 to advance via a penalty shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU earned eight corners through the first 21 minutes, but Navy utilized its height in the backline to hold the Terriers to just one shot attempt by senior Quinn Matulis at 17:16 that was blocked.
- Sophomore Daniel Kim flicked a header just over the crossbar at 27:56, and senior Colin Innes blasted a shot inches wide left of the far post at 29:11.
- In the following minutes, Navy blocked junior Eitan Rosen's attempt and saved one from Innes.
- Navy's best chance came in the 38th minute with a move into the box that led to two shot attempts, but the reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Year and senior Francesco Montali stopped both to keep the game scoreless.
- BU recorded three corners and three shots over the last 16 minutes against Navy's lone shot attempt but could not avoid overtime.
- In the second OT, senior Gianluca Arlotti rifled a shot at net, but Pierce Holbrook was in position for his second save.
- During the shootout, BU started off missing its initial attempt by nailing the post, but would go on to make its next eight thanks to Montali saving Navy's fourth shot.
- After Navy scored its ninth penalty kick in Round 10, the Terriers sent their last attempt over the bar.
GAME NOTES
- Montali's two saves marked his eighth solo shutout and BU's ninth of the season, marking the Terriers' most since the 2014 squad also tallied nine.
- The Terriers set a program record with seven draws.
- The contest marked the final game for Arlotti, senior Liam Cullen and graduate student Evan Morrison.
