BOSTON – Junior
Sydney Johnson dropped a game-high 21 points, and sophomore
Caitlin Weimar tallied a double-double, but the Boston University women's basketball program suffered a 64-61 setback to Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
In a game that featured 20 lead changes and seven ties, BU (15-11, 11-4 PL) had a chance to send the game to overtime in the final possession. However, a last-second three-pointer was off the mark, allowing the Raiders (6-20, 4-11 PL) to hang on for the win.
Johnson added five assists and three steals to her ledger. On the day, Weimar recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Freshman
Alex Giannaros also reached double figures with 11 points and three assists.
Colgate had three Raiders in double digits, led by Tiasia McMillan's 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Sophia Diehl and Taylor Golembiewski each posted 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the first 4:22 of the game as Durant converted a layup underneath the basket.
- The Raiders executed an 11-2 run from five different scorers from that point, however, to take an 18-10 edge, later leading 20-12 after the first quarter.
- Colgate's largest lead in the first half was nine, as Sophia Diehl countered a Johnson jumper with a triple to go ahead 23-14 with just over two minutes gone by in the second.
- From there, the Terriers scored eight straight points to pull within 23-22, punctuated by a pick-and-roll layup where senior Chiara Tibbitt faked out her defender for the bucket at the 3:06 mark.
- Tibbitt made two free throws with 1:29 until halftime to put BU on top. Tiasia McMillan sank a pull-up for Colgate, then Johnson did the same from the charity stripe for a 28-27 Terrier lead.
- Jenna Paul's left-handed baseline floater found the bottom of the net with 33 seconds to go, giving the Raiders a 29-28 halftime advantage.
- After Giannaros drained a jumper inside the paint to put BU ahead 32-31, Colgate went on an 8-2 spurt that created a 39-34 advantage with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter.
- From there, Johnson scored the first five of 10 straight Terrier points on a triple and a transition layup, creating a 44-39 lead that served as their largest of the game.
- The Raiders would score nine of the next 12 points, leaking into the fourth quarter. However, sophomore Sophie Beneventine's corner three replenished BU's lead to 50-48 with 31 seconds down in the frame.
- Morgan Frank bracketed two threes around a Johnson fastbreak layup, putting Colgate on top 54-52 at the 7:04 mark.
- With 2:07 to go, Giannaros found Weimar in the low block, and the sophomore worked her way downhill to go off glass for a 59-58 Terrier lead.
- McMillan and Golembiewski answered with jumpers that made it 62-59 Raiders with less than 40 seconds left.
- Durant fought under the hoop to make a layup with 25.7 seconds left, but that would be BU's final points of the game, missing their final two shots.
