Matty Spaeth matched her season-best with four goals, and junior
Jennifer Barry controlled nine draws, but Army West Point's defense limited the Boston University women's lacrosse team in a 13-7 setback for the Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field in the 2022 Patriot League opener.
BU (0-7, 0-1 PL) and Army (6-2, 1-0 PL) were locked into a 3-3 contest after the first quarter. However, the Black Knights outscored the home team 10-4 the rest of the way, including a scoreless second quarter. The Terriers got to within 11-6 in the fourth quarter, but were held in check the rest of the way.
Freshmen
Hannah Tillier and
Kaylee Munster found the back of the net, while sophomore
Tobey Tick was the oldest Terrier to score in the game. Junior
Claire Gola added an assist, while sophomore
Reilly Agres made 13 saves.
Kathleen Sullivan led all scorers with five goals and two assists. Julia Gorajek potted a pair of goals in a three-point afternoon. Lacey Bartholomay secured eight saves between the pipes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first score didn't come until the 10:26 mark, when Spaeth potted a free position goal while BU had a woman-up advantage.
- Army scored two goals within 55 seconds to go ahead 2-1, but the Black Knights turned it over with under four minutes to go in the first, and Tick lit the lamp for the equalizer.
- Fourteen seconds after Army took a 3-2 lead, Barry won the ensuing draw control to allow Spaeth to beat the Black Knight goal with 2:32 on the clock.
- Tillier almost gave BU the lead on the next possession, but her shot hit the post. Bartholomay denied Spaeth with 54 seconds left to keep it 3-3 after one.
- Four different Black Knights scored in the second quarter to stake Army to a 7-3 halftime lead.
- Spaeth opened the third quarter with two unassisted tallies 40 seconds part, cutting BU's deficit to 7-5 1:10 into the stanza.
- That would be all for the Terriers in the third, however, as Army rattled off a 4-0 run for the next 25:07 of the game.
- Munster notched her first-career goal with a low-angle shot just inside the 12-meter fan to break the deficit.
- Gola found Tillier on the doorstep with 2:04 to go to conclude BU's scoring.
GAME NOTES
- BU held a 19-5 advantage on the draw, and cleared over 82 percent of its opportunities.
- Army had the edge in shots (36-25) and ground balls (18-11).
- Six of the Terriers' seven goals were scored by freshmen. This year, the rookies have accounted for almost 28 percent of the team's goals.
- Spaeth takes over the team lead with 12 goals on the season, and is tied for the most points with 14.
- Munster is the fifth Terrier to tally her first collegiate goal in 2022.
- Agres' 13 saves mark the second time she has had over 10. She had 15 against UMass on Feb. 26.
- Barry now has 158 career draw controls, surpassing Danielle Etrasco for fifth place in program history. She is three away from her own season-best of 78.
- The all-time series is now tied 3-3 between BU and Army.
