BOSTON – Boosted by nine extra-base hits and strong pitching from the junior duo, the Boston University softball team opened the home weekend series against Bucknell with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon.
Extending their win streak to 11 games, the Terriers (22-13) claimed a 7-1 game-one win over the Bison (4-25) to help head coach
Ashley Waters reach the 200-win milestone. BU followed up with a 7-0 victory for its sixth shutout of the season.
Eight Terriers tabulated at least two hits on the day with junior
Caitlin Coker batting 4-for-7 with three runs, two triples and a double. Sophomore
Kayla Roncin also earned four hits with the help of a two-run homer, and senior
Aliyah Huerta-Leipner posted a team-high four RBIs. In the circle,
Lizzy Avery (10-8) tallied eight strikeouts with the lone run coming off a solo shot before
Allison Boaz (12-4) used six strikeouts to limit Bucknell to just two hits.
GAME 1: BU - 7, Bucknell - 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Avery started the game with two strikeouts, Coker led off in the bottom half with a triple, but Olivia Marinelli recorded a pair of strikeouts of her own to keep the game scoreless.
- The Bison's Chase Knapp started the second with a lead-off double before Avery tallied two more strikeouts.
- BU broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs off four hits and two misplayed bunts.
- Senior Emily Gant Gant started with a double and scored on the Bison's first error.
- Huerta-Leipner plated both sophomore Lauren Keleher and senior Nicole Amodio with a two-RBI triple before scoring on junior Audrey Sellers' RBI single to left.
- Keleher added one more run by tripling to left and scoring on Amodio's RBI single up the middle.
- Zoie Smith put Bucknell on the scoreboard homering to center on a full-count pitch in the top of the sixth, but the Terriers came back in the bottom half with freshman Tyesha Williams singling to short, taking third on Coker's double and scoring on graduate student Jen Horita's two-RBI double.
- Avery earned three quick outs to seal the victory.
GAME 2: BU - 7, Bucknell - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU struck early as Keleher singled to right, moved to third on Roncin's double and scored on a wild pitch.
- The Terriers broke open the game with four runs off six hits in the bottom of the third.
- After Gant and Horita hit back-to-back RBI singles, Huerta-Leipner delivered a two-RBI single through the right side for the 5-0 advantage.
- Bucknell earned its first hit with one out in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the seventh.
- Boaz struck out the side in the fifth and extended the streak to four straight in the sixth.
- Roncin followed Coker's single with a two-run bomb to put the final score at 7-0.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Huerta-Leipner earned two of her five multi-RBI performances in the DH sweep.
- Roncin tied her personal best with three hits in the second game for the fifth time this season.
- BU has earned 9+ hits in seven straight games and is now 6-0 at home.
- The Terriers have tallied at least six strikeouts in a game 16 times this season.
- Owner of the most conference tournament titles at BU with four, Waters is the second coach to record 200+ wins after Shawn Rychick ('05-'12) earned 271 wins while at the helm.
