PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 13 Boston University men's lacrosse team battled for 60 minutes against No. 4/3 Princeton, but the Terriers suffered a 12-7 setback on Saturday afternoon at Sherrerd Field.
BU (8-3) and Princeton (8-2) were tied in the third quarter and BU was within two entering the final 15 minutes, but the Tigers scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter as part of a 5-0 run to pull away from the Terriers.
Junior Vince D'Alto led the Terriers with two goals while senior Timmy Ley notched a goal and an assist. Senior Matt Hilburn, juniors Thomas Niedringhaus and Donnie Howard, and sophomore Christian Quadrino all found the back of the net.
Junior Roy Meyer led the Terriers with three caused turnovers and also picked up five ground balls. Senior Will Carson collected one caused turnover and gathered a team-high seven ground balls. Sophomore Dane DeGoler tallied four ground balls, as did Junior Conor Calderone, with Calderone going 12-of-23 at the faceoff X. Senior Matt Garber made nine saves while freshman Will Barnes stopped the only shot on target he saw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Garber made a terrific stop early in the contest on a point-blank chance.
- The Terrier short stick midfielders were great in the opening five minutes, as Howard and junior Robert Gallop each had a caused turnover.
- Princeton opened the scoring at 7:37 of the first quarter when the Tigers beat the 10-man ride with a long-distance shot.
- Quadrino evened the score just 21 seconds later when he came around the cage and notched his 13th goal of the season.
- Princeton took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter, but Howard evened the score at 12:25. He fooled his defender into thinking he was subbing off before changing direction, catching a pass and then dodging past a defender before firing home his first goal of the season.
- Hilburn then gave BU the lead with a man-up goal at 11:10.
- The Tigers tallied the next two goals, however, to take a 4-3 lead with 4:58 to play in the second quarter.
- BU had a chance to even the score in the final seconds of the half, but Princeton forced a turnover and scored with 2.1 seconds remaining to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
- Ley got BU going in the third quarter with his first of the day at 10:32. Junior Louis Perfetto's shot rang the post, but Ley picked up the ground ball and quickly scored to make it a 5-4 contest.
- Niedringhaus then evened the score just 45 seconds later, but Princeton scored a man-up goal at 8:01 to retake the lead and then added another at 5:37 to make it 7-5
- D'Alto got BU within one at 7-6 with 3:55 left in the quarter, but another Tiger goal at 2:45 pushed their lead to 8-6.
- The Tigers then tallied the first four goals of the fourth quarter to make it 12-6 with 5:39 to play.
- D'Alto's second strike of the day made it 12-7 with 4:34 on the clock and BU had an EMO immediately after that marker, but Princeton defended that chance to effectively end the game.
