Softball Seals Series Sweep at Army with 11-1 Run-Rule Victory

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Boosted by three homers, the Boston University softball team completed the weekend series sweep by cruising to an 11-1 run-rule victory at Army West Point Sunday afternoon.

Seven Terriers (37-13, 15-0 PL) combined for 12 hits, including five for extra bases, to extend their NCAA leading active win streak to 26 games and the nation's best active road win streak to 17 contests. The Black Knights (18-31, 8-7 PL) were held to just five hits and one unearned run by junior Lizzy Avery (18-8), who tallied three strikeouts for her second complete-game win of the weekend.

Sophomore Lauren Keleher led the offense by batting 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Senior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner collected two extra-base hits with a two-RBI double and triple, while junior Caitlin Coker, sophomore Kayla Roncin and senior Emily Gant all went yard for BU's 11th run-rule victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coker for the second time this season led off the game with a homer, this one on a 3-1 pitch to right, to take the lead for good.
  • Keleher followed up by singling up the middle, taking second on Roncin's sac bunt and scoring on graduate student Marina Sylvestri's RBI single up the middle for the 2-0 advantage.
  • After collecting nine strikeouts in a nine-inning victory over Army on Saturday, Avery had two strikeouts to end the first.
  • BU added eight runs off six hits in the third to all but put the game away, as Keleher started with a single and run scored on Roncin's homer to left.
  • With the bases loaded, Huerta-Leipner delivered a two-RBI double that saw a third run score on Army's fielding error.
  • Both Keleher and Horita added an RBI for the 10-0 advantage.
  • Helped by an error, Army loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and scored on an RBI ground out before Avery prevented further damage with a swinging strikeout.
  • Gant responded with a two-out homer to center for the game's final run in the fifth.
  • Army tried to keep the game alive with a pair of singles, but graduate student Jen Horita threw out the advancing runner at third from center to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers' 37 wins are tied for fourth most in program history.
  • BU's 21 triples this season are tied for the third most ever in the program record book, while the 72 doubles are tied for fifth most.
  • Roncin moved up to a tie-for-third at 72 hits, which are the eighth most ever in a season by a Patriot League player. Her 49 runs scored are tied-for-fifth.
  • Gant's 45 RBIs are the fifth most at BU.
  • The Terriers improved to 22-11 all-time against Army with their sixth straight win in the series and first-ever sweep at West Point.
UP NEXT
  • BU will next return home and host Lehigh in a three-game series with both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single matchup set for a 12 p.m. start.
  • The Terriers are currently 15-0 in the PL standings and need one win over the Mountain Hawks (13-2) to clinch tournament hosting rights along with their fourth straight regular season title.
