BU Drops Season Opener to Northeastern, 1-0

BOSTON - Despite four shots each from graduate students Jenna Oldham and Amy Thompson, and a 15-6 advantage on total attempts, the Boston University women's soccer team fell to Northeastern 1-0 in the 2022 season opener on Thursday at Nickerson Field.

Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first half, but the Huskies broke the ice off a corner kick in the 48th minute, and preserved the lead thanks to seven saves from goalkeeper Holland Stam. Alexis Legowski provided the lone tally of the match.

In addition to Oldham's and Thompson's chances, senior Sophia Woodland and junior Lily Matthews each placed two shots on goal. Matthews played the full 90 minutes along with seniors Ashley Buck and Kayla Ross.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU generated three shots within the first 10 minutes of the game. After Ross could not convert a header from a corner kick in the eighth minute, junior Abigail McNulty got loose for a close-range attempt that floated above the crossbar.
  • Almost halfway through the opening stanza, Thompson fed Matthews in the middle of the box for a right-footed shot, but Stam dove to her left and made a diving glove stop.
  • Stam made another save in the 29th minute, this time on Thompson's 20-yard blast.
  • Woodland corralled the ball near the right post to flick a shot on net, but Stam kept the game scoreless with a save in the final moments of the half.
  • On Northeastern's goal, Porter Dooley sent the corner towards Katherine Marchesseault, who got enough of a piece on it to poke the ball towards Legowski in the middle. Legowski turned and buried it into the left side of the net.
  • Less than six minutes later, Oldham was alone atop the 18-yard box for a blast from her right foot, but Stam came up with the ball.
  • Bennett made a sprawling save to her right in the 83rd minute after Vivian Akyirem turned on a 25-yard shot, keeping BU's deficit at one.
  • The Terriers' final offensive opportunity came from Woodland's boot with 2:26 to play, but her shot went right to Stam.

GAME NOTES

  • BU recorded 15 shots in its first game of the year. The Terriers didn't reach that mark in 2021 until the ninth game.
  • Bennett made two saves after entering in the second half. Sophomore Celia Braun got the start, but only faced one off-target shot.
  • The Terriers also held the edge in corners, 8-5.
  • Freshmen Giulianna Gianino and Morgan Weaver started in their collegiate debuts. Classmates Margy Porta and Natalie Godoy also made their Terrier debuts.
  • Thursday marked the first match for Casey Brown as the Terriers' head coach.
  • The result is just BU's second regular-season home loss since Sep. 2, 2021, a span of eight games.
  • The Terriers remain ahead in the all-time series, 14-8-1.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers look to regroup on Sunday (Aug. 21), when they host Providence at Nickerson Field for High School and Community Night. Opening kick is slated for 6 p.m.
