Terriers Ride Balanced Effort to 73-63 Win over Eagles

BOSTON – Sophomore Lauren Davenport set a career-high with 16 points, junior Caitlin Weimar tallied her ninth double-double on the year, and the Boston University women's basketball program used a sharp third quarter to defeat American 73-63 on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.

Trailing by six at halftime, BU (9-6, 4-0 PL) dropped 25 points in the third, a season-high. The Terriers, who trailed by as many as 10 points, outscored the Eagles (3-12, 2-2 PL) 43-27 in the second half.

Davenport shot 5-of-9 from the field, and collected six rebounds as well. Weimar finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks. Seniors Maggie Pina and Sydney Johnson collected 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Emily Johns led American with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Sadie Stetson and Ivy Bales posted 11 points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johns' old-fashioned three-point play 2:08 into the game staked the Eagles to a 5-2 lead, but a Giannaros three followed by Durant's layup off a feed from Johnson propelled BU to a 7-5 edge.
  • The Terriers led by as much as 14-7, thanks to a 7-0 run that featured two Weimar layups and a Johnson triple, with 3:31 to play in the opening quarter.
  • After American cut it to 15-13 BU after 10 minutes of action, the Eagles ripped off a 12-0 run to begin the second, holding BU at 15 points for nearly six minutes.
  • Giannaros drilled a corner three-pointer with 2:16 until halftime, then Pina's steal turned into a layup to close the Terrier deficit to three points.
  • Davenport scored the final three points of the second for BU, but Molly Lavin's right-wing three before the buzzer put American on top 36-30 at halftime.
  • American maintained an eight-point edge after Stetson's three 1:24 out of the break, but the Terriers ripped off 15-straight points over a five-minute span. Johnson, Pina, and Davenport each contributed three-point scores during the run, with the latter's making it 48-41 with 3:10 left in the third.
  • Freshman Sam Crispe's and-one bucket and Davenport's layup off a give-and-go with Giannaros put the Terriers up 10 before Lavin nailed another three before the horn, closing the quarter with BU on top, 55-48.
  • Pina opened the fourth with a second-chance jump shot, then Davenport added three more points to replenish BU's lead to 13, 61-48 with 7:17 remaining.
  • Davenport swished another three from the left side at the 4:26 mark to put BU on top 66-53.
  • Though the Eagles got as close as nine late in the quarter, Pina iced the game with another layup while drawing contact. Her free throw pushed the advantage to 71-57 with 1:20 left.
