Terriers Close Non-Conference Slate With 1-1 Draw Against Bulldogs

BOSTON – Sophomore Margy Porta scored for the second-consecutive match, and the Boston University women's soccer program tied for the second-straight match, this time a 1-1 contest vs. Yale on Tuesday evening at Nickerson Field.

The Bulldogs (5-4-5) jumped ahead in the second minute, only for the Terriers (6-5-5) to equalize with nine minutes until halftime. A competitive second half featured 17 combined shots, but the match was deadlocked at the final horn.

Junior Hugrún Helgadóttir and freshman Ava Maguire tallied the assists on Porta's strike. Junior goalkeeper Celia Braun made four saves, three coming in the second half.

Elle Rappole found the back of the net for Yale on passes from Ellery Winkler and Alanna Butcher. Marissa Shorrock collected six saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Yale broke the ice just 1:36 after the opening kick when Winkler sent the ball to the right corner for Butcher, who centered it for Rappole in the penalty box to put the visitors ahead.
Racing on net to the left of the box, senior Abigail McNulty drilled a shot towards the left post that Shorrock sent away. Maguire turned a shot wide left on the ensuing Terrier corner.
In the 36th minute, Maguire received a pass from a racing Helgadóttir down the left sideline, tip-toed the end line, and dished off to Porta in front of the left post as the sophomore beat Shorrock.
Porta nearly notched an assist on a lead pass to freshman Kaiya Stewart, whose 1-on-1 chance was turned aside by Shorrock.
In the 59th minute, Shorrock punched out senior Kayla Ross' cross into the box, only for sophomore Giulianna Gianino to collect the loose ball and rocket a shot on target, but Shorrock denied her as well.
Braun collected a header off a Bulldog corner kick in the 65th minute.
In the 84th minute, Winkler zipped a ball near the right post that required a diving save from Braun.
Moments later, freshman Kat Slott had her shot blocked, then Helgadóttir lasered a 30-yard opportunity off the crossbar. Senior Lily Matthews had the final chance in the sequence, but Shorrock came up with the ball.
Rappole's try at the tie-breaker in the 88th minute was snared by Braun.
In the final minute, Stewart aimed to convert a cross from the right corner, but the shot sailed high.

STATS

Shots favored BU, 16-10. The shots on target advantage was 7-5 in the Terriers' favor.
Ten of those BU chances occurred in the second half.
Gianino, Matthews, and Stewart paced the Terriers with three shots each.
The Terriers also generated six corner kicks to Yale's two.
Four Terriers played the full 90 minutes: Braun, Matthews, Helgadóttir, and senior Grace Ferrara.

NOTES

After scoring her first collegiate goal last Saturday (Oct. 14), Porta is the sixth-different Terrier to register multiple goals this season.
BU's sophomore class has now accounted for 15 of the team's 23 goals this year, good for over 65 percent.
Maguire earned her first collegiate point in the effort.
Helgadóttir's helper was her first in a BU kit. She also played the full match for the first time in her collegiate career.
In their last seven matches, the Terriers are 3-1-3.
The 2023 squad has matched the season record for draws in a season with five, last achieving that feat in 2003.
The all-time series between BU and Yale now stands at 4-3-1 in the Terriers' favor.
