BOSTON – Sophomore
Margy Porta notched her third goal of the season, but the Boston University women's soccer program dropped a 2-1 road contest to Army West Point on Wednesday evening at Malek Stadium.
With the result, the Black Knights (9-6-3, 6-2-1 PL) repeated as Patriot League regular season champions and secured the top seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. BU (7-6-5, 4-3-2 PL), having already clinched a postseason berth, earned the No. 4 seed with the result.
Porta registered two shots off the bench. Senior
Abigail McNulty totaled a game-high seven shots, two of which were on target. Junior goalkeeper
Celia Braun racked up eight saves.
Brigid Duffy and Jasmine Talley each potted goals for Army, with Kaelan Bradley and Madison Woodward providing the assists. Sage Strohman made five stops between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- McNulty placed a ball towards the net in the sixth minute that Strohman batted aside. On the ensuing corner, McNulty's second try went high.
- In the 20th minute, Braun barely got her fingertips on a 1-on-1 opportunity against Woodward at the top of the box. Army could not connect on a quality chance on the following corner.
- Duffy worked around a Terrier defender in the 32nd minute to whip a 20-yard shot into the upper-right corner, making it 1-0 in Army's favor.
- Less than four minutes later, the Black Knights kept possession in BU's end, leading to Talley's volley from atop the box over Braun for a 2-0 edge.
- In the 55th minute, senior Lily Matthews attempted a turnaround shot from 15 yards out, but Strohman snagged the ball.
- Sophomore Natalie Godoy took away possession from Army in its territory before whipping a 25-yard chance right into Strohman in the 80th minute.
- Matthews redirected a cross that got by the Black Knights' back line, but Strohman collected it in the 83rd minute.
- With four minutes to play, Godoy turned on a Black Knight marker to lead Porta down the middle. The latter sent a right-footed kick over Strohman to cut the Terrier deficit in half.
