Men's Soccer Claims Patriot League Regular Season Title with 2-0 Triumph at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Both senior Andrew Rent and sophomore Alex Bonnington found the back of the net to help the Boston University men's soccer team finish atop the Patriot League standings with a 2-0 victory at defending regular season champion Army West Point Wednesday night.

With their first PL regular season title since 2014 and 13th overall from a conference, the Terriers improve to 10-3-4 with a 7-1-1 league mark. BU tallied 19 shots for the second consecutive game, while senior Francesco Montali earned three saves to secure the shutout against the Black Knights (3-9-4, 1-5-3 PL).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Eitan Rosen set the tone early for the Terriers, forcing Keanu Likewise to make a save at 5:08 and sending another shot just off the mark 24 seconds later.
  • Rosen forced another save at 12:19, and graduate student Quinn Matulis went over the bar at 14:35 on a free kick attempt.
  • In the 16th minute, junior Kevin Torres fed the ball to Matulis, who raced down the field and sent the ball to Rent on the right side of the box.
  • Rent made a quick juke on his defender and fired a low shot toward the far post for the 1-0 advantage at 15:16.
  • The Black Knights earned a corner in the 24th minute but were unable to convert, as Montali stopped a shot from Eric Lusskin.
  • Rosen forced another save at 38:09 to finish the half with six shot attempts.
  • Army made a charge on the BU backline between the 53rd and 58th minutes, earning three corners and three shots, but the Terriers did not break.
  • The Terriers doubled their lead in the 68th minute when sophomore John Roman swiped the ball away near midfield and sent the ball up to Rent, who sprinted down the field and found Bonnington for a quick shot under Likewise's legs.
  • Army only attempted one shot the rest of the way with Montali making the save at 89:41 to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
GAME NOTES
  • BU has earned double-digit victories for the first time since 2015 and the 26th overall time in 75 years as a program.
  • Rent became the fourth Terrier to score at least three goals this season, while Roman became the sixth to earn multiple assists.
  • Torres became the 11th Terrier to earn an assist and the 15th overall to earn a point.
  • BU recorded a season-high 19 shots for the second consecutive game and finished in double digits for the eighth time. 
  • The Terriers snapped a five-game winless streak (0-3-2) against the Black Knights to improve to 9-4-4 all-time in the series. 
  • BU earned its first shutout in eight meetings at Army, 
UP NEXT
  • By finishing in the top two for the second consecutive season, the Terriers have earned a PL quarterfinal bye and will next host an opponent to be determined on Tuesday (Nov. 7) with the time to be announced later.
  • The Terriers will be seeking their first conference tournament title since capturing the 2008 America East title.
