Women's Ice Hockey Topped by New Hampshire, 4-2

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team was unable to dig out of an early deficit and dropped a 4-2 game to New Hampshire in the opener of a home-and-home weekend on Friday evening at Walter Brown Arena.

The visiting Wildcats twice scored goals just over a minute apart to take a 4-0 lead in the opening period. BU got on the board late in the first and added another towards the end of the second but could not get any closer and had its four-game win streak snapped.

Sophomore Lilli Welcke scored her first goal as a Terrier and senior Catherine Foulem added her fourth of the season for BU, which moves to 4-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in Hockey East play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNH opened the scoring 8:23 into the game when Chavonne Turner skated in towards the left post and Alexa Matses' poke check caused the puck to tip up over her and into the net.
  • Moments later, Marina Alvarez collected a rebound in the slot and backhanded it in for a 2-0 lead at the 9:47 mark.
  • The Wildcats pushed their lead to 3-0 at 13:51 of the first as Kira Juodokis converted from the right circle on a rush directly off a faceoff in the UNH zone.
  • BU got the first power play of the game 15 minutes in but the Wildcats continued their productive start by scoring shorthanded right after freshman Mari Pietersen replaced Matses in goal.
  • UNH quickly cleared the puck off the first faceoff of BU's power play and Brooke Hammer raced down to cause a turnover behind the Terrier net before her second effort eluded Pietersen for a 4-0 lead.
  • The Terriers took some momentum into the first intermission after senior Tamara Giaquinto skated to the outer edge of the right circle and found an open Welcke streaking down the left slot for her first BU goal with 1:47 left in the opening frame.
  • Each team had a five-minute major in the second but the penalty-kill units for both teams stood tall.
  • BU scored the only goal in the middle period off a perfectly executed rush in the final minute as Foulem found the back of the net from the left circle off assists from juniors Christina Vote and Maggie Hanzel.
  • The Terriers held a 25-11 shot advantage over the last two periods but were unable to get any closer.
  • BU pulled Pietersen in favor of an extra attacker for the final 4:50 of regulation but UNH netminder Sedona Blair was up to the task, making a handful of tough saves to secure the win.

GAME NOTES
  • BU held a 33-25 shot advantage for the game.
  • Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.
  • Matses made seven saves on 10 shots while Pietersen finished the night with 14 saves on 15 shots.
