Terriers Fall to Lafayette in Overtime, 3-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Boston University field hockey team had its season come to a heartbreaking end on Thursday afternoon as Lafayette scored in the final minute of regulation before adding another in the fourth minute of overtime to earn a 3-2 victory in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Championship at the Jacobs Recreational Complex.

Senior Thalia Steenssens scored just 3:11 into the contest to give BU an early lead and freshman Nicole Lauro gave the Terriers a 2-1 advantage in the 41st minute.

Senior Kate Thomason turned in an eight-save performance for the Terriers, who end their season with a record of 8-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU got the start it was looking for as sophomore Amalia Preece got control of the ball at the top of the circle in the fourth minute and fed it to Steenssens, who took a shot from the dot that went off a defender and in.
  • Each team had two shots and one corner in the opening quarter.
  • The Terriers withstood a second-quarter push by the Leopards and took the 1-0 lead into the break.
  • Lafayette used its fourth corner of the day to get on the board as Lineke Spaans scored just 1:07 into the third quarter.
  • BU got the lead back at the 40:45 mark as Lauro tipped in a pass from freshman Bella Cloutier.
  • From the midfield, Steenssens got the ball to Cloutier, who spun around at the top of the circle before sending the ball towards the left post as Lauro got her stick in front of the defender's and redirected the ball past the goalkeeper and into the cage.
  • Lafayette put the pressure on for the final seven minutes of regulation and pulled goalkeeper Emma Garvey in favor of an extra field player with 4:15 remaining.
  • After successfully defending three fourth-quarter corners, the Terriers allowed the Leopards to draw even with just under a minute to play.
  • Lea Good sent the game to overtime on a goal assisted by Spaans.
  • In overtime, the Leopards earned three corners and used the last of those to end the contest.
  • After Thompson made an initial stop on the corner, Josephine van Wilj got control of the ball on the right edge of the circle and drilled the ball to Lena Thedrian, who was open in front of the goal for a game-winning redirect.

GAME NOTES
  • Cloutier's assist was her first collegiate point.
