BOSTON – Helped by a pair of 20+ point performances, Maine defeated the Boston University men's basketball team, 74-65, on Wednesday night at Case Gym.
The Black Bears (7-4) only led by two with 1:49 remaining before hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to pull away from the Terriers (3-6), who had their five-game home win streak snapped.
Freshman
Kyrone Alexander led BU with 13 points, while sophomore
Nico Nobili tallied 11 points and a career-high seven rebounds. Plagued by foul trouble in the first half, sophomore
Otto Landrum nearly had a double-double with nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
The reigning America East Defensive Player of the Year Kellen Tynes tallied a game-high 21 points, and Peter Filipovity earned his third double-double in five contests with 20 points and game-high 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a contest featuring just one tie and one lead change, Landrum helped BU jump out to an early 7-1 lead with a steal, block, assist, layup and finally a 3-pointer at 18:17.
- Freshman Michael McNair extended the lead to 20-13 with 10:31 remaining, as the Terriers started the contest 7-for-8.
- BU cooled off though, hitting just two of the next 10 attempts, as the Black Bears went on an 18-3 run capped by Tynes' 3-pointer at 2:42.
- After the Black Bears responded to Alexander's 3-pointer with one of their own, senior Miles Brewster drove to the hoop to to cut the deficit to 34-28 entering the locker room.
- Ja'Shonte Wright-Mcleish followed Jaden Clayton's layup with a bucket from behind the arc to give Maine its largest lead of the game, 41-30, at 16:59.
- The Terriers rallied with nine straight points on back-to-back 3-pointers from Nobili and Okwuosa along with a layup plus bonus free throw from Nobili at 15:02.
- Quion Burns on the next possession flushed a trey to spark a 7-0 spurt capped by two Tynes free throws at 13:11.
- BU chipped away and eventually cut the deficit to just one, 56-55, as Alexander netted a 3-pointer and found Landrum for a slam dunk at 6:50.
- The Terriers later tied the game on freshman Matai Baptiste's 3-pointer at 4:14, but Maine quickly retook the lead for good on Tynes' jumper.
- BU went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe on the next two possessions before Filipovity helped Maine pull away on back-to-back 3-pointers.
GAME NOTES
- Alexander scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, while Nobili hit the mark for the second time.
- BU hurt its cause at the free throw line, shooting 10-of-19 (.526), while the Black Bears went 15-of-20 (.750).
- Maine finished the game 26-of-51 (.510), as the Terriers went 12-of-29 (.414) to end the game 24-of-52 (.462).
- Maine cut BU's series lead to 61-42 by snapping the Terriers' three-game win streak.

- BU will hit the road for two games, starting on Sunday (Dec. 10) at Wagner with a 1 p.m. start.
- The teams have met six times but not since BU pulled out an 89-70 road victory on Jan. 30, 1982.
