Furious Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Just Short for No. 14 BU at Vermont

February 11, 2023

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 14 Boston University men's lacrosse team scored the final six goals of the game, but the Terriers fell to Vermont, 14-12, on Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field.

BU (0-1) cut a 14-6 deficit to 14-12 with 2:38 remaining in regulation, but Vermont (1-1) got two crucial stops to keep BU from getting any closer.

Senior Louis Perfetto led the Terriers with four goals and added an assist for five points. Vince D'Alto joined his classmate Perfetto with five points, as he notched three goals and two assists. Graduate student Timmy Ley also notched a hat trick while senior Thomas Niedringhaus was one of five different Terriers to find the back of the net. Sophomore Jimmy O'Connell and junior Tommy Jepson added one assist apiece.

Preseason First Team All-American Roy Meyer had a monster game for BU, as he led the Terriers with five caused turnovers and eight ground balls in addition to scoring a goal during the Terriers' fourth-quarter comeback. Senior Patrick Morrison had two caused turnovers and four ground balls while classmate Robert Gallop tallied three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Senior Conor Calderone battled all day at the X, going 11-for-14 in the second half as part of his 14-for-27 day. Calderone also gathered four ground balls on Saturday. Graduate student Matt Garber finished the day with 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • D'Alto got BU on the board first at 10:14 of the first quarter, but the Catamounts closed the frame with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Perfetto and Ley answered for BU early in the second stanza to make it 3-3, but a 4-0 Catamount run put UVM ahead, 7-3, with 4:49 left in the half.
  • The teams traded goals to end the half, with Perfetto and D'Alto each scoring an unassisted goal to make it 8-5 at the break.
  • Ley got the Terriers going in the third quarter with his second of the day, but Vermont scored the final five goals of the frame before adding a sixth consecutive strike at 12:08 of the fourth quarter to make it 14-6.
  • The Terrier comeback began with 10:25 remaining in regulation. Senior Robert Gallop forced a turnover, gathered the loose ball and ran up the field before dishing to D'Alto, who quickly found Perfetto for the goal.
  • D'Alto scored just 14 seconds later, then Meyer got to the crease for a goal with 8:10 to play that cut the UVM lead to 14-9.
  • Niedringhaus and Ley then scored just 51 seconds apart to make it a 14-11 game.
  • Garber came up with two huge stops during a man-down situation to keep BU within three.
  • Perfetto's final goal of the day on an EMO with 2:38 remaining in regulation made it a two-goal game, and the Terriers immediately got another man-up chance after a third faceoff violation on UVM.
  • D'Alto's bid to turn it into a one-goal contest was stopped by Matt Shaffer (15 saves), however, and UVM got an EMO of its own to help close out the game.
