BOSTON – Shooting over 53 percent from the field while committing a season-low four turnovers, the Boston University men's basketball team rolled to a 77-61 home win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Terriers (13-16, 6-10 PL) more than doubled the Bison (11-18, 4-12 PL) in made free throws, 21-10, and also posted a 19-4 advantage in points off turnovers to help head coach
Joe Jones reach the 200-win milestone at BU.
Graduate student
Walter Whyte totaled a game-high 16 points, while classmate
Fletcher Tynen scored 14 points with a team-high six rebounds. Both graduate student
Jonas Harper (12) and senior
Ethan Brittain-Watts (11) joined Tynen in netting two 3-pointers apiece.
Alex Timmerman earned a double-double with 13 points and game-high 11 rebounds for Bucknell, but the Bison finished 23-of-54 (.426) from the field for the loss. Ruot Biljiek earned 12 points, and Andre Screen posted 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Screen followed Xander Rice's 3-pointer with a floater for an early 7-2 lead.
- Ian Motta extended it to double digits, 25-15, at 10:51 on a 3-pointer and added another thanks to Bijiek with 6:03 left in the half for a 30-20 advantage.
- Bucknell would never increase the lead further though, as BU chipped away and only faced a 35-31 halftime deficit after Harper hit a jumper with 1:21 remaining.
- The Bison tried to hold off the Terriers from completing a rally with 3-pointers at 14:31 (43-35) and later 12:03 (47-43).
- However, both junior Miles Brewster at 11:44 (47-46) and Tynen at 8:59 (53-52) were able to strike from behind the arc to keep the deficit at just one point.
- Freshman Otto Landrum took the lead for good, 54-53, following junior Anthony Morales' steal with two free throws at 8:28.
- With a 58-56 advantage and under 5:30 remaining, Harper hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 12-0 run capped by two Tynen free throws at 2:32.
- In the final 71 seconds, Whyte hit a trey, and Tynen added two more free throws to help seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Jones currently ranks second all-time in the BU program record book behind Dennis Wolff's ('94-'09) 247 total victories. Adding the 86 victories during his tenure at Columbia from 2003-10, Jones just needs 14 more to reach 300 total.
- Whyte moved up to No. 7 at BU with 1,650 points. Harper just needs two more points to become the 30th Terrier to reach 1,100.
- BU's previous low in turnovers was six against New Hampshire.
- The Terriers have won seven of the last nine meetings to cut Bucknell's series lead to 14-11.
UP NEXT
- BU will visit Army West Point on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at 6 p.m.
- The Black Knights won the first meeting, 83-74, back on Jan. 14 at Case Gym.
