Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 5 Terriers Edged in Overtime by No. 20 Merrimack, 4-3

BOSTON - Freshmen Lane Hutson and Jeremy Wilmer each tallied two points, but the No. 5 Boston University men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-3 overtime setback to No. 20 Merrimack on Saturday at Agganis Arena.

BU (20-10-0, 14-6-0 HE) erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead into the third period after Hutson beat the second-period buzzer, but Merrimack (18-12-1, 13-8-0 HE) scored a power-play goal just 1:26 into the final frame to tie the game. The Warriors then beat the overtime buzzer to earn the extra point in the Hockey East standings. The play was reviewed for a potential too many men on the ice penalty, but the goal stood.

Senior Matt Brown notched his team-leading 14th goal of the season to become the first Hockey East player to hit 40 points. Freshman Ryan Greene also lit the lamp. Junior goaltender Vinny Duplessis, who made 10 saves in two periods of work in relief of classmate Drew Commesso (10 saves), also assisted on Hutson's marker.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Merrimack tallied twice in a span of 4:10 late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Brown got BU on the board at the 4:34 mark of the second stanza when he intercepted an outlet pass at the Merrimack blue line and dangled past a defender before uncorking a shot past Hugo Ollas (34 saves).
  • Greene then tied the game midway through the period with a power-play strike after some slick passing from Wilmer and Hutson.
  • Hutson sent BU to the locker room with the lead thanks to his goal that crossed the line with just 0.4 ticks remaining in the stanza.
  • Ben Brar's power-play goal early in the third leveled the contest and Brar also scored the game-winner with a buzzer-beater of his own.

GAME NOTES

  • The Terriers outshot the Warriors, 37-24.
  • Brown is the first Terrier since David Farrance (43 points) in 2019-20 to reach the 40-point milestone; Clayton Keller (45 points) was the most recent Terrier forward to achieve that feat, doing so in 2016-17.
  • Hutson is the first Terrier defender to score 10 goals in a season since Farrance notched 14 in 2019-20.
  • Brown recorded a point in both games this past weekend.
  • The Terriers have not lost in regulation at Agganis since Nov. 18, 2022.
  • BU was 16-0-0 this season when leading after two periods prior to Saturday night.

UP NEXT

  • BU will travel to Vermont for a two-game series with the Catamounts that begins Friday, Feb. 24.
