No. 3 BU Begins Beanpot Title Defense Monday Night against No. 20 Northeastern

The No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team will begin its Beanpot title defense on Monday night when the Terriers take on No. 20 Northeastern in the opening round of the 70th Dunkin' Beanpot at TD Garden. Puck drop for a rematch of last year's championship is scheduled for 8 p.m.

BEANPOT NOTES

  • The most successful team in Beanpot history, BU enters this year's tournament with an all-time record of 93-45 (.674).
  • The Terriers have won nearly half (31) of the previous 69 Beanpot tournaments.
  • They have successfully defended their Beanpot title on 17 different occasions, most recently in 2007 when they won their third title in a row.
  • After winning the Beanpot just once in the '50s, BU has won it 30 times in the last 57 years, including 14 of the past 28.
  • BU has advanced to the championship game 55 times, including six of the last seven tournaments, its best stretch since a 13-year run from 1995-2007.
  • This will be the fifth straight Beanpot that BU and Northeastern have played one another.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU has won seven straight games and is currently No. 3 in both national polls.
  • The Terriers were the only Beanpot school to win on Friday night, earning a 5-3 victory at Maine.
  • Five different Terriers lit the lamp in Orono, with senior Wilmer Skoog completing a two-point night with his game-winner midway through the third period.
  • Freshman Lane Hutson collected a career-high four assists in the win and now leads all NCAA blue liners in points (35) and assists (26).
  • Hutson is first among all Hockey East skaters in assists and is second in the league in points only behind teammate Matt Brown, who has 37 points (12g, 25a).
  • Brown is fourth nationally in points per game (1.42) among players with at least 10 games played.
  • The Terriers boast the top-scoring offense in the NCAA, averaging 4.23 goals per game.
  • They also average 35.85 shots on goal per game, which ranks second in the country and first in Hockey East
  • BU has reached 20 wins in its first 26 games, which is the fastest a Terrier squad has hit 20 wins since the 2008-09 team started 20-5-1 en route to a national title.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This will be the 248th meeting between the Terriers and Huskies since they first met during the 1930-31 season.
  • The only team BU has played more games against is Boston College (287).
  • BU holds a 169-66-12 (.709) advantage over the Huskies, including a 14-4-1 record at TD Garden.
  • In the 13 meetings that have taken place since the start of the 2018-19 season, seven have gone to overtime.
  • The two teams have played 33 overtime games in the all-time series; BU holds a 13-8-12 edge after its 4-3 OT win at Northeastern on Nov. 19.
  • The Terriers have recorded 16 of the 21 shutouts between the crosstown rivals, with their most recent one coming in the 2022 Beanpot title game.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

  • Northeastern finished January on a five-game win streak before suffering a 4-3 overtime setback to UConn on Friday.
  • The Huskies are 13-10-3 overall and 11-5-2 in Hockey East.
  • Senior Aidan McDonough leads Northeastern in both goals (17) and points (32) while junior Gunnarwolfe Fontaine leads the Huskies with 16 assists.
  • Sophomore Justin Hryckowian (13g, 15a) is second on the squad with 28 points and is tied with McDonough for second on NU with 15 assists.
  • Junior goaltender Devon Levi has started all 25 games in which he has appeared, going 13-9-3 with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.
  • One of Levi's four shutouts was a 2-0 triumph at Agganis on Nov. 18.
