BOSTON – The No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team had its seven-game win streak snapped on Monday as No. 20 Northeastern posted a 3-1 victory in the semifinal round of the 70th Dunkin' Beanpot at TD Garden.
Senior
Matt Brown scored with 1:51 left in regulation to make it a 2-1 contest and end Devon Levi's shutout bid. The Huskies, however, were able to seal the game with an empty-netter.
BU, which got 26 saves in goal from junior
Drew Commesso, moves to 20-7-0 on the season.
Levi made 33 saves for the Huskies, who improve to 14-10-3. For the first time in tournament history, Northeastern and Harvard will meet for the Beanpot title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Huskies scored once in each period and got the game's first goal exactly 14 minutes into the contest.
- From the inner edge of the left circle, Aiden McDonough buried a cross-slot pass from Vinny Borgesi to make it 1-0 in favor of the Huskies.
- Northeastern struck again early in the second off a faceoff as a left-point attempt by Jeremie Bucheler was stopped by Commesso but Jakov Novak pounced on the rebound at the right post to push the lead to 2-0 at 1:48.
- BU had the first three power chances of the evening but were unable to convert on any of them.
- The Terriers held a 16-7 shot advantage in the third and Levi continued to deny every chance until BU pulled Commesso in favor of an extra attacker.
- Brown exchanged passes with senior Domenick Fensore before shooting the puck from above the left circle and finding the back of the net with 1:51 to play.
- The Terriers quickly controlled the puck in the NU zone again, allowing Commesso to return to the bench, and created four shot attempts (two blocked, one wide, one saved) before the Huskies were able to get it out of their zone.
- Northeastern was able to get a fresh line change while BU raced to control the puck and the Huskies forced a turnover in front of the BU bench before Hunter McDonald scored on the empty net to create the 3-1 final.
GAME NOTES
- BU went 0-for-4 on the power play and killed off both of the Huskies' chances on the man advantage.
- Northeastern had 21 blocked shots, including a game-high six from McDonald, while BU had 10.
- Senior Domenick Fensore and freshman Lane Hutson picked up assists on Brown's goal.
