PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Boston University women's tennis team (10-4, 1-0 PL) posted a 4-3 upset over No. 49 Brown (11-4, 0-0 IVY) on Saturday. After dropping the doubles point, the Terriers came back and won four singles points to earn the victory over their Ivy League opponent.
 
The win is BU's first ranked victory since 2013 and is the highest ranked win since 2007.
 
While the doubles point favored Brown, it did not go without contention from BU. Sophomore Michelle Kleynerman and grad student Shelly Yaloz won their doubles match 6-3 in the No. 2 spot to force Brown to have to win in the other two spots. It was not an easy sweep for Brown, however, as senior Erica Di Battista and junior Kaitlin Tan forced their opponents, the No. 63 doubles team in the nation, to a close tiebreak before the Terriers fell 7-6 (5) at the top of the lineup.
 
In singles, BU struck first with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win from Tan in the No. 4 spot. Junior Victoria Carlsten followed that up with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) win in the No. 3 spot to help BU lead 2-1. Brown earned another point with a victory at the top of the lineup, but BU pushed again when Kleynerman battled back from dropping the first set to win 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 from the No. 2 spot.
 
With BU up 3-2, the Terriers needed one more win to solidify the match victory. Freshman Emily Zhao competed in the No. 5 spot and won her first set in a close 7-5 decision. Zhao settled in nicely despite the close first set and pulled away with a 6-1 second set win to clinch the match for the Terriers. Brown picked up a final point at the bottom of the lineup to bring the final score to BU 4, Brown 3.
 
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday (March 25) when they travel to Yale for a 1 p.m. match.
