BOSTON - Senior
Louis Perfetto recorded three goals and four assists while graduate student
Matt Garber made 17 saves to help lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU (9-3, 6-1 PL) recognized its 13-member senior class prior to the game and many of those seniors turned in terrific performances to earn the Terriers' third straight win against Lehigh (8-4, 5-2 PL). Senior
Vince D'Alto finished with three goals and two assists, one of six Terriers with multiple goals. Senior
Roy Meyer recorded five caused turnovers and added three ground balls while classmate
Patrick Morrison tallied three ground balls and forced three giveaways. In addition, junior
Dane DeGoler matched his career high with seven ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
Graduate students
Timmy Ley and
Jake Cates each notched three points on two goals and one assist while junior
Tommy Bourque recorded two goals and two assists. Sophomore
Jimmy O'Connell collected a pair of man-up markers for the first multi-goal game of his career. Graduate student
Matt Hilburn and senior
Donnie Howard each secured an assist, with Howard also causing two turnovers in a fine performance in the defensive midfield.
Senior
Conor Calderone battled all day against Lehigh's Mike Sisselberger, the top faceoff specialist in the nation. Calderone went 11-of-28 with five ground balls, but more importantly did not allow Sisselberger to have many clean wins.
Garber had perhaps his best game of the season, making several huge stops as part of his 17-save performance. Garber only allowed two straight Lehigh goals on two occasions, with the Mountain Hawks' final two markers coming in the final minute when the game was out of reach.
With the Terriers' win and Army West Point's victory at Navy on Saturday, those two teams will meet in West Point on Friday, April 28, with the Patriot League regular-season title on the line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cates opened the scoring at just 2:35 into the contest, but Scott Cole answered with 9:51 on the clock to tie the score.
- That was the last time the teams were tied, as BU scored four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead.
- The run began with a pair of D'Alto goals before Bourque closed the quarter with a great catch and finish with 39 seconds to go.
- Ley opened the second quarter with his first goal of the day to make it 5-1 at 12:01.
- Lehigh scored the only other goal of the stanza at 3:01 to cut the BU lead to 5-2 at the half.
- O'Connell's first strike of the contest came just 13 seconds into the third quarter as the Terriers capitalized on a man-up chance that carried over from the first half.
- Lehigh answered just 43 seconds later to get back within three, but a sweet behind-the-back finish by Perfetto restored the Terriers' four-goal lead.
- Two straight man-up goals from Lehigh made it a 7-5 game with 8:31 left in the frame, but a great individual effort by Perfetto just 30 seconds later made it 8-5.Â
- Ley pushed the lead to 9-5, with the teams trading goals to make it 10-6 entering the final 15 minutes.
- The teams continued to trade goals, with Lehigh getting within three goals three times in the fourth quarter, only for BU to respond and push the lead back to four.
- D'Alto closed the scoring for BU with 1:16 remaining to make it a five-goal game, though Lehigh did score twice in the final 34 seconds to create the 14-11 final.
