BU Clinches Postseason Berth with 19-15 Win Over American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The BU women's lacrosse (9-8, 4-5 PL) team defeated American (6-10, 2-7 PL) in a 19-15 result on the road Thursday afternoon. Six Terriers scored in the win and junior Reilly Agres made five saves in net to keep BU's season alive.

Senior Lauren Kaye and sophomore Matty Spaeth led the Terriers in goals with five apiece. Senior Claire Gola led BU in points with eight thanks to four goals and four assists of her own.

Grad student Maddie MacMaster and junior Kendall Sims each tallied two goals while senior Jennifer Barry scored one. Sims added to her points total with two assists while MacMaster, Kaye and sophomore Hannah Tillier each tabbed one.

With the win, BU will play in a quarterfinal game to start the Patriot League Tournament on Sunday, April 30. The Terriers will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed depending on how the remaining regular-season games play out across the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers built an early lead, scoring four unanswered goals to start the game.
  • Gola helped Spaeth light the lamp for BU at the 13:31 mark in the opening frame.
  • Sims then found Gola who was in front of the net to give BU its second goal.
  • With 9:57 to go, MacMaster found the back of the net thanks to a pass from Gola.
  • Spaeth capped BU's four unanswered goals with her second of the day.
  • American got on the board with a goal at the 7:41 mark in the first.
  • A penalty on the Eagles opened a free position opportunity for BU on which Spaeth scored to make it a hat trick day.
  • The Eagles tabbed two more goals to close in 5-3 with 3:46 to go.
  • Sims found Gola who spun around at the front of the net to score with 34 seconds left.
  • The Terriers put an exclamation point on their first quarter performance when Kaye scored with just four seconds remaining in the first.
  • American was given a yellow card early in the second which allowed Tillier's pass to find Gola at the net to help BU lead 8-3.
  • The Eagles scored two back-to-back goals before Sims could answer at the 4:22 mark.
  • Before the close of the half, American scored three additional times to BU's one as the Terriers led 10-8 with an added goal from Spaeth.
  • American brought its momentum into the second half and scored the first two goals of the third to tie things up 10-10.
  • BU then went on a five-goal streak starting with Kaye's first of the day to regain the lead.
  • Spaeth then extended BU's lead 12-10 with her fifth and final goal of the day.
  • Gola assisted Kaye on BU's next two goals, the second of which was scored on a woman-down situation when MacMaster was serving a yellow card.
  • Gola pushed BU's lead to 15-10 before American could respond one more time before the close of the third.
  • The Terriers added two goals from Sims and Barry to lead 17-11 headed into the fourth. MacMaster and Kaye assisted on the two goals, respectively.
  • American outscored BU in the final frame but it was not enough to catch up with the Terriers.
  • The Eagles closed in 17-13 before MacMaster scored her second of the day at the 7:22 mark.
  • Kaye followed that up with BU's 19th and final goal with 6:26 to go.
